How will the EU new policy on the internet, affect our sourcing? [closed]

To me this means there will be no more linking to sources.. they are forcing original material only, if we are source, grabbing facts, they will be removing this too..

This concerns me.  How will we be able to source french, Irish, Dutch, German, etc.. if we can't link sources, because they now wish for royalties, for linking or mentioning the source the EU does.

First of all is that the new rules you referred to haven’t been approved yet. The article is a bit confusing but it is a copyright enforcement type of rule. Shouldn’t impact much of the genealogy we allow here. There is organized resistance to the proposed rule and hopefully it won’t pass.

I spent some more time reading and there likely wouldn’t be a problem except where Wikitreers violate the Honor Code and upload copyrighted materials. Proper source citations should still be legal.

No more downloading and uploading but just noting the citations, it was saying even the links could be charged, for those whom do advanced sourcing and ad the link to the source. Will that be out of the question?

I’m not a lawyer but it doesn’t look like WikiTree would be affected. The histrionics of the site referenced makes it sound all encompassing but it is really targeting people who aggregate news. Research uses are explicitly exempted but lunks could fall into a terms of use licensing.

The only profiles these rules affect are for those still living. Those profiles for the living have always been difficult to source even before the new EU rules so i don't see much change there. As for profiles for the deceased the new rules will have no effect so the end result for sourcing will be little or no change.

 The link you provided applies to news services so again for the most part there will be little change for any profile that is for a deceased person.
