What do we know about Red Bonnet?

This is another profile that was previously misassociated with Pocahontas. His supposed parents each have their own g2g discussion threads.  Is there any evidence of his existence independent of his supposed parents? Thanks

This supposed man is a mash up of Native American tribes and attributes.

The Ojibwe people lived up in Canada and the northern most states that border it. Wapasha was the name of several Chiefs of the Dakota, a member of the Sioux Nation that lived in Minnesota. The two tribes were enemies.

I think this is a candidate for the this person did not exist sticker.

Jeanie, can you clarify (and a source would be helpful): do you mean that the Sioux and the Dakota were enemies or the Sioux/Dakota were enemies with the Ojibwe?

The Sioux/Dakota/Lakota were enemies of the Ojibwe.  The Ojibwe gradually moved west onto land claimed by the Sauk and Fox and the Dakota.  This document from the University of Michigan seems to provide accurate information and maps:  http://www.geo.msu.edu/extra/geogmich/ojibwe.html

We'd also claimed that the Ojibwe lived in Northern Canada, but that web site indicates they were on both sides of the great lakes.

Their oral history includes references to a great sea, assumed by most to mean Hudson’s Bay, which is pretty far north in Canada.

According to The Handbook of American Indians, Red Leaf is the 'first Wapasha of which there is historical evidence.' Anyone ancestors of his are unknown and therefore fictional.
