Stephon Ryan,

Until I did a DNA test, I wouldn't have been able to help you, and my answer will not help much right now.

I have connected with people that are my second cousins, and we are related through a grandparent, a great-grandparent, and also through a great-great grandparent.

I wasn't familiar with their names and had my doubts, but when I talked to my 85 year old mother, she confirmed the relationships.

Having said that, I have to agree with Herbert Tardy and say that a family tree with sources is your best bet in confirming your relationship with a second cousin.

Good luck on your hunt!

Hi Stephon,

Not exactly clear what you are asking.  Second cousins share a common great grandparent.  Third cousins have a common great-great grandparent.  To find out which individual ancestor they share, I think a single DNA test is not enough.  Far easier to compare family trees, in my opinion.

Thank you both so much for this it is a great  just to see someone say I am related to someone , I cannot compare trees as  I'm Adopted with no trace of my of my birth parents Surname  , Its hard for me to get my head around as I've been searching for years ,
Stephen, now you have your DNA you may want to look at the adoption angels project. They do wonderful work and have had many successes. They may be able to guide you in using your DNA to build your genetic tree! Good luck :-)
Thank you Lizzie I will do that .
