SEE http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/GEDMatches

Do you have to evaluate all matches?

Yes. If you want to have WikiTree profiles created from your file, you need to evaluate all matches and reject or accept each one.

This could take hours if you have a large file. Although it may seem tedious, remember that each profile you create is an addition to our collaborative, single family tree project. Thought and care needs to go into each addition.

You may want to import a gedcom in sections/ partial imports and do a smaller batch at a time.

Ok how about weeks not hours!!

Thanks
It can take a very long or even looong time.  But ...

not doing it creates duplicates and triplicate and quads and quints etc.  of parents/spouses/siblings/children.

and that takes even loooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggRRRRR!!!! time to 'clean up' all the created profiles and merges!!!  There's no easy way out.

See this example of the spouse and children:    http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Grandy-20

where people uploaded duplicate and then triplicate profiles from gedcoms to an original profile.
now its just that I have sdpent 3 days trying to get it put into Gedcom so I have to take a break! Put it down to being 73 nearly 74!
As gedcoms are deleted from the system after a month you could spend weeks doing it only to find the file was deleted before you got to the import bit. Editing the imported profiles afterwards can take three or four times longer than checking with GEDmatches.

This is why many people suggest your first import should be about 50 people, much eaier to manage.

I did as you suggested on both counts - when I went to my profile & clicked on changes it took me to the same page that tells you to click on 'restart your work clear all skips it goes to instructions but I can't get past that all it says is error on page. Would it be better to delete my GEDCOM & then re-enter it?

This seems to be an impossible situation

What is the error message? I can see there is a message that there are people born before 1600, so as well as checking all the matches found you will need to skip all those early people.
I gave up on trying to access it my usual way & went to Google Chrome- I'm not sure how I got there but I finally got beck to the check list I needed it is totally different in appearance from the first I had but easier to use. I am going to work with this until it is done I am just going to reduce it, & not shut my computer down until it is finished. The error message was at the very bottom where it says connecting etc. Thanks
