Which Last name to use?

If there is an illegitimate child born with a birth registry and he is born using fathers last name... but then 5 years later in a census he is listed as mothers last name, which name should I use?

My assumption is the Birth Registry name... but wanted to be 100% sure since there was no marriage and the father married someone else about a year later.

Use the birth registry name for his LNAB and put his mother's last name in the "current last name" box, as this was used later, and presumably is the name he kept right up to his death.

OK thanks again.  With your help I was able to find some more info and have William living with his mom/grandparents in 1871 and then with his aunt in 1881... helps confirm I have the correct family from the sources.
Great. Good to know it helped. You did the right thing buying the certificate - it can often save hours and hours of trying to figure something out. And thanks for the "Best Answer" selections !
