I have a problem adding images.

When I upload them, they give as the URL my whole Ancestry.com private tree info. I have everything downloaded to my tree there so it always wants to link directly to my tree instead of giving the plain website I found it from originally. What do I do? Some of these I got a while back and trying to retrace them would take forever, I just made sure I had original docs.

I don't know much about Ancestry.com, can you not go into ancestry and open  the image, then copy and paste it into Ms word? It will then save it in my documents on your PC. You can then upload it from there.

I could probably do that but the problem is sourcing. It won't give the URL from the original source but gives my ancestry tree as the source instead. How do I get around that?
Yes I can see that as being a problem, well then you don't have any option but to do it manually, you never mentioned, but I assume that you are wanting to put these on Wikitree? there is an option of uploading a gedcom, but there will still be a lot of manual work making corrections as gedcoms generally upload with errors. The other option is to go and write down your sources then put them in manually. If however you did not record any sources on Ancestry then you have no option but to go and look them up again.
Thank you for your help. I guess I'm going to have to figure it out, will probably take me a while. I'm going to let people know that are just starting out not to make these mistakes, wish I had known to download everything into a file first but live and learn....the hard way.

Also, on sources that I use if I have remarks or something to explain it should I put my remarks in the same box with the source or somewhere else?

Hi P. Yes sometimes we do learn the hard way unfortunately. Every time I add a profile or update any data and sources in that profile, I also do the same on a spreadsheet in Ms Office, it's like doing it twice, but if anything happens then you have all your research backed up for safe keeping. I also back up my spreadsheet to an external device, should something go wrong with my PC. then I still have the info. A lot of hard work goes into research and can be blown away in a matter of seconds! Actually I do it 3 times, cause I also print everything out and keep it in sleeved arch lever files.

As for your other question about remarks and explanation, You create a heading just above your Sources,
--Research notes--

under this heading is where you do all your explaining.

The Sources are stand alone and always the last thing displayed eg.

--Biography--

--Research notes--

--Sources--

<references/>

Thank you for your advice. I also have Family Tree Maker which I download my Ancestry Tree to and then download that to an external drive. I looked through that and I see all of the sources but I'm not sure how to put the source with whatever the item is. Maybe that will help, need to see if they are referencing my tree or the original URL.

If I do GEDCompare will that pull over documents and photos as well or just the basic info? I'm very new to this system and don't want to mess things up!

Hi P, all software and applications are different, and I don't know anything about GEDCompare or Family Tree Maker, I have never used it. It may be a good idea for you to post a question in the G2G forum under Genealogy help and I'm sure you will get a lot of good feedback from members who are familiar with both Family Tree Maker and GEDCompair. This i'm sure will make a big difference in your endeavors.

Great...haha, kind of thought that was where I was! Will do and thank you again for all of your input and great advice.
Pleasure and only a pleasure to be able to help where i can
