Newfoundland featured profile: The infamous John Peyton

This week's featured Newfoundland Project profile is a sad one. John Peyton was an early British Newfoundland settler, who had a career as an explorer and magistrate, and was responsible for capturing and wiping out the last of the Beothuk.

Any improvements to the profile of John Peyton (or linked profiles and pages, you'd like to make) would be welcome, of course! And if you know of a profile of an interesting or famous or notable Newfoundlander; or you've worked on a Newfoundlander's profile you're proud of, or you've just seen a great profile or page that you think needs recognition---send me a link, and I'll maybe put it up for a featured profile!

was it him or his Son John Jr who wiped out the people?

They both went on the expedition that caught Shanawdithit and her aunt, I believe. But John was the one charged with excessive cruelty, according to what I read. And he seems to have killed a lot of Beothuk prior to that.

But neither can be held blameless, for sure.

I am researching link possible to this man. Through my Morrissey family in Caplin Bay now Calvert. I will update more info to show lineage of Peyton from England to paternal side, if so. I'm away right now.
