How does my GEDCOM file become a tree?

Just a confused newbie... I upploaded a huge GEDCOM file and it was processed. Then I thought I would have a tree, which happens at other sites I used. But I just get a long list of my names that I am supposed to do something with. How does my GEDCOM file become a tree?

Since you are only a Guest, you first need to volunteer.

Then you can go through the process of creating your tree from your GEDCOM.

Wikitree does NOT DO the autopopulation of trees that other places do.

How big was your GEDCOM?

Because now you are going to have to go through every single name on that GEDCOM and match or not match it to everyone else already on wikitree who has the same name,

It is actually a lot faster to just create a new profile for everyone on your tree. That is what I did and I dont regret that decision.

WikiTree's gedcom import process is a two step process:

  1. "gedcompare" -- check for duplicates that are already in WikiTree
  2. add/update into new/existing profiles.

both of these steps are manual, on your part, one at a time through the list.

Once you have completed the registration process and become a Family Member, you may begin to add your family tree to our database. Eva and Robynne have given you the steps you need to take.

Since you have over 2500 people in your gedcom file, I strongly suggest you split your file into smaller segments for processing. You will be able to finish the review and importation of the individual members much more quickly if you have a small file. You will not be allowed to create profiles through gedcom import for anyone born prior to 1700.

Your gedcom report also indicates you have no itemized sources. You will need to add sources to your profile pages.

Hi Dag,

You still need to be a WikiTree Member before you can use the GEDCOMpare Utility to add folks to the System.

Please take a look at this page as it reviews GEDCOMpare basic and things you should be familiar with when loading a gedcom file.
