Did you know that president Charles De Gaulle is related to Arthur Guinness?

While I was researching the McCartans for the Irish Military Diaspora in France I came across this article The Irish in Paris about De Gaulle being part Irish, which led me to this BBC News DNA article Guinness origins begin to settle The McCartans (the third leg in this triangle) had a small kingdom in North East Ireland and were supposedly descendants of High kings of Ireland.  If you are interested in untangling this web I left the links on the project page  Irish Military Diaspora France under "Patrick McCartan’s son John".

These statements are meaningless.  Surnames have never had kingdoms.
We are using the Kingdom categories as a means of gathering families and clans for the sake of research and sourcing - and yes, in Ireland family names are connected to the names of kingdoms for example - County Tyrone  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Irish_History%2C_Kingdom_of_Northern_U%C3%AD_Néill

Just to clarify - the people of the kingdom of the Northern Uí Néill in Ireland claim descent from Niall of the Nine Hostages - Eógain was one of his sons - his descents are the Cenél nEógain of the kingdom of Tír Eoghain; known today as Tyrone.

Thanks, Richard! Very interesting.

Charles de Gaulle's ancestors were reviewed not long ago to make sure they have at least one correct source, and I noticed the McCartan connection (in its francized form, Macartan) but had not idea of the McCartan's Guinness connections - the link that might have told more of their origins is dead. Here is the earliest ancestor we have in France:

Haven't reached Ireland yet. The spelling should be Macartan for the descendants who were born in France, since that is how they are recorded in official documents.

Antoine Joseph MACARTANNE was born out of wedlock in 1716 in Valenciennes

There is a problem.

The father of Antoine Joseph MACARTAN is not John MACARTAN. According to his marriage record in 1753, his parents are Antoine Joseph MACARTAN(NE) and Marie Catherine HAYEZ.

Working back from Isabelle's French profile; John MacCartan now linked to Irish Military Diaspora https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Macartan-2

David - please add these sources to the profiles - can see the frames but can't read French well enough to enter info correctly.
