Question

Human Migration is the movement by people from one place to another with the intentions of settling, permanently or temporarily, in a new location. People may migrate as individuals, in family units or in large groups (known as mass migration).

The Human Migration Project has been created in order to assist in the identification, classification, categorization and to provide improvements for all profiles related to our ancestors who left one country and moved to another country.

I'm not sure if this is the right approach here. We already have categories for immigration. And I think that this project might be attempting to do too much. I suspect that the different population movements might be better handled separately. A number of these migrations are already covered by projects, including the Palatines, the Puritans, the Quakers, Australian Convicts and many more. And then there are groups of refugees like the United Empire Loyalists.

I am not at all sure that lumping all these groups together is necessary.

The original Immigration category was replaced by the new top level Migration category recently. With that change, it was determined through the Categorization project that a new project should be started in order to better define the category structure.

While there are projects that do focus on specific Migration movements separately, there is no cohesiveness between the categories used. So the project in question here is not meant to lump all of the groups together, but to work towards a coherent and comprehensive structure that fits all movements, through either existing or future projects.

This would start by identifying the relevant migration events, linking out to existing projects, starting new focused projects, and also working on migration events that do not fit within a set project's focus (single family or individual migrations).

Not certain that a top level project is necessary to define categories. Can't that be done by Categorization Project?

Categorization has asked that it be undertaken by a project of interested parties. This project can actually be viewed as a subproject to Categorization until which time it can be reclassified as a standalone project or one within Worldwide history.
