I'm having a hard time with Smith-158848

According to death certificate, his father was William Smith and mother's maiden name is Tier. I found on familysearch that his father was Benjamin E Smith and mother was Harriet Tier.  Which is correct?

The informant on the death certificate was Roswell E. Smith, his son, who was likely to know his grandfather's first name. You don't include a link for the family search record, and there are too many for me to search through. Unless familysearch has a good source for Benjamin E. to be Nathan's father, I would discount it. A grandson is a pretty good secondhand source.

EDIT: I found Benjamin E. Smith in a family tree on familysearch. It is unsourced. Therefore, since William has a source, I would give it a strong preference. You may want to add a note that a family tree at familysearch names Benjamin E. Smith as Nathan's father, but that it is unsourced, in case a future party is tempted to "correct"  his name.

EDIT 2: 1850 U. S. Census for Benjamin[e] Smith (wife Harriet) [shown as Nathan's parents in an ancestry.com tree) does NOT name Nathan Woodhull as a son. Nathan would have been about 10 or 11 as of that census, which DOES show a Woodhul [sic.] C Smith, age 10.

Excellent work, Jim. You mined the sources and gave good suggestions. Well done!

I think this might be your 'Nathan Woodhull' Smith, by connecting the dots of Sarah (Smith) Durbrow and James B. Smith - likely some of Nathans' siblings..  So much for transcriptions!!!

I don't think that is my Smith. Thanks for showing me. Nathan's mother, according to his death certificate, was a Tier. I'm just not certain her first name was.

This might be his mother Harriet's death record (not in 1855 census).  Maybe the actual death cert or cemetery has more info?
