CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Weekend Chat is for everyone. It's a place to catch up on what people are up to and to share what you've been doing.  New members can say hello, introduce themselves, ask questions, and meet each other.  Our seasoned members can share progress or successes from their projects, give tips and advice, or chime in on hot topics.

Post as many answers and comments as you wish. It doesn't hurt anyone to post a lot, and enjoy the multitude of topics.

Are you ready for Weekend!! smiley

Here in the mid south (United States) we are starting our first couple of days of summer with rain, and high temps!! cheeky

Do you have summer plans this year? A trip to the beach, Disney World, Aunt Alice's house...  won't you share with us, and if you have a picture or two, we would love to see those too!!!

Thanks for hosting Dorothy. I am in the same area you are Dorothy. Our plans is getting my dad home not today but next Friday. I will explain this in my answer. But I am here early again. But we only planning on getting ready to move up to Greeneville, Tennessee before or after it gets cold. I will go more in depth in my answer.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.
Thanks Linda for posting, appreciate you. I replied to your answer below.
Thank you Dorothy for hosting the chat!
Hi Dorothy thank you for hosting how is your gorgeous dog?

Thanks Mindy and Susan.

Susan, my dog is doing fine, 7 years old yesterday. Just can't go too many places with the temps in the 90's. Too hot even for a few minutes in the car.sad

So our genealogical surprise of the week is that my husband of 45 years and I are DNA matches (distant cousins - probably 5th-8th) !! Both families have always said that we are descended from Patrick Henry, but I doubt that is true for either side, at this stage of the research! So, he has  committed to study the DNA results to figure out which segment needs further research, etc. If there's anyone out there who needs a challenge, drop me a note!! :)

Wow, that must have been a big surprise!! Glad to hear hubby is willing to help. Also if you would like a larger audience to see if you can get some assistance, don't forget the G2G forum. Lots of researchers on board!! Good Luckwink

Funny. I am related to my wife's father according our DNA. looking into, it appears that intersect a couple of times.
Pamela autosomal DNA results really only reliable for about 4 generations so at 5-8 there are a huge number of false positives.  To be a true match you need to go down to the chromosome level and find an overlap of at east 7cm and at least 700 SNP.

15 minutes to closing. Just wanted to say "Thank you" for joining us this weekend, and look forward to seeing you again next weekend. smiley

Hoping you have a great week ahead!!   Dorothy B. this weekend's chat host.

Summer flowersThis week life slowed me down a bit, but nothing stops me from working on WikiTree smiley. I wanted to share mom's flower beds. She had a reunion for her side of the family last month when they were just starting to bloom. Next month will be the reunion for my father-in-laws side of the family and a lot of these will be gone. Until then, I love wandering next door and enjoying them! Mom and I put a lot of work into those flower beds and the reward has been worth it!

by Mindy Silva G2G Astronaut (1.1m points)

Mom has three trees up front that we built flower beds around, and then the big one in the back yard. The one under the pine tree in the front yard is the only one that we have to replant to keep it pretty. Too much sap I suppose...

Your Mom's garden is stunning!

Awesome photos, lovely colors; thanks for sharing Mindy yes

Thank you Doug and Dorothy. I really enjoy the beauty of the flowers!
Very nice.
Wow the flowers are amazing your mom are very lucky to have a garden like that.

Thank you for sharing
Oh, wow! I can’t compete with that! Those flowers are gorgeous!

Ditto what everyone says on these chat. Great pictures Mindy. With what been going on in my life and my parents life we don't have a lot I am trying to get the outside yard work caught up.

indecisionWelcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.indecision

Wow Mindy you could charge tickets to see that garden!  Stunning!

Summer Plans?? Yeap, My favorite spot is Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Lots of things to do, great place to go on days like today with temps in the mid 90's. in Columbia.  When are you coming over Dorothy, anyone else??

by Sandra Davidson G2G6 Pilot (189k points)
Ooooh, wish i was closer!
Wow Sandra I am on my way, the place on the photo look delightful how fortunate to be in a place like this.

Thank you for sharing
Myrtle Beach was our destination of choice (when dad let us have one) for getaways from Charlotte.  It the same as when I was a kid, not by a long shot! But still beautiful.

Columbia can be hot as Hades in the summer. No wonder you want to get away!

Denmark will be ablaze with bonfires tonight – if rains don't put a damper on the Sankt Hans Aften celebrations.

We are going to celebrate it in Tivoli, because we had some very hot weather lately we are not allowed to make bonfire tonight but Tivoli gard n will make something that look like smoke, even we did get rain.

Although many cultures celebrate Midsummer – the shortest night of the year – with fire, in Denmark the night is infused with customs that harken back to darker and more superstitious times in the country’s history.

Sankt Hans Aften (St. John’s Eve) takes its name from John the Baptist, who according to Christian tradition was born six months before Jesus. With Christmas celebrated on December 24th in Denmark, that puts John’s birthday on June 24th. The tradition of celebrating the eve of his birthday with a bonfire dates back to the 1600s.

Hi Susan, The celebration sounds like fun! Thank you for sharing the history with us.

Hi Susan, thank you for sharing! I hope you had fun smiley

I love hearing about what is happening all over the world.  It so interesting to learn about different cultures from people who actually live there!  Thanks for sharing Susan!

Hi everybody,

I just got the news I finally can add a new member to my family. smiley We waited for some time now, but the girl enjoyed it longer than planned in her mummy's womb.
Beside that I enjoy the football (soccer) Worldchamps. Let's see how the Germans will play later tonight

by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Congratulations on the new baby.  She will grow so fast!  Enjoy her as she grows.  It goes by faster than you can believe, probably a fact you remember from the past.
Thanks God there is Skype. By far the best way to stay in touch with friends and family when you're thousands of kilometers away. :)
congratulation with the new baby you must be in heaven

Hello everyone, Thank you Dorothy for hosting chat. I haven't made it to chat in a while. This week has been a bad one my brother passed away last Saturday. We was devastated cause it was unexpected. He had COPD and hooked up to a vent, but other than that he was doing good. He was in a nursing home in Dayton Ohio. The nurse said she had talked to him and he was in good spirits. Then he asked to go to his room, a few minutes later the alarm to his vent went off and by the time they got to him he was non responsive (it was in the middle of shift change). He was always pulling the tube off the vent, we think he did it again and accomplished what he wanted.

On a good note we finally got our gardens out. It had been so hot I couldn't stand to be outside for more than 5 minutes at a time. I have COPD also and high blood pressure and arthritis in my back and it hurts constantly so it takes me a while to get things done. Well my sister had a day off and got to help me with it. We live in the country, my sister her hubby and me, 4 dogs 9 cats and 2 horses. We lost a bunch of the flowers cause it was so hot and they hadn't been planted yet and they would dry out quick.

I didn't get to finish the challenge last week, I do apologize for that. blush

by Dallace Moore G2G6 Pilot (155k points)
Sorry to read of the passing of your brother. Wishing you strength in this time
I was sad to read about the lost of your brother, my condolence you must be devenstated
Thank you Jelena.
Thank you Susan.

Ditto I agree with everyone here on this chat.

indecisionWelcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.indecision

Hi Dallace, so sorry to hear of your loss!
Thank you Mindy
Dallace you have my sympathies.  My mother was also on oxygen and kept pulling the tube out some way.   She also died from a combination of COPD and heart issues.   So I am sending you and your family a huge hug.

I'm going to the alumni banquet of my high school tonight.  I am the only one of the ten remaining members who attends.  We started out with 29
graduating in 1954.  Three are all that remain in the area.  We will celebrate
65 years anniversary next year.  Our class has an annual get together for
anyone who was ever in our class with us, also, and we usually have 20
or so including spouses or friends.
Tomorrow my son is taking me to Canada to visit two friends who are 90
and I haven't visited for 10 years.   How time flies.  Lots to catch up on and so little time to do it.  Phone calls are frustrating because he can't
hear very well with the current set up.  Typing e-mails is very slow for
both ends.  Neither of us are computer hotshots.  The sun just broke through after a drizzly morning.  I hope it stays clear tomorrow.   Canada
may not welcome us when Trump gets done insulting the prime minister.
I'll go while the going is good.

Oh A high school reunion. It sounds fantastic. Good luck and safe travel on your trip to Canada.

Sounds like you had a fun and busy weekend Beulah.  Hope you had a great time!

Today (and every day during the summer lol)  is...

NATIONAL HYDRATION DAY

The games get intense under the hot summer sun. On June 23rd, National Hydration Day reminds us to replace fluids lost in the heat of battle.

The human body contains more than 60 percent water. Maintaining that balance while training is a challenge, doing it during the summer months is a practice that must be consistent. Becoming overheated or dehydrated can lead to heat stroke and possibly death.

There are ways to help prevent dehydration. Being hydrated before a workout even begins is important. If you are under hydrated before you start it is hard to catch up once the sweating starts.  Drink plenty of fluids throughout the training. These can include sports drinks which contain electrolytes (Magnesium, Calcium, Sodium and Potassium) to replenish the essential minerals the body loses through perspiration.

For some sports, there is also a product like FuelGard™ Mouthgard and Electrolyte Tablets, which has the dual duty of protecting the athlete as well as providing essential electrolytes for maintaining hydration balance while the athlete trains.

After the workout, your body will continue to need to replenish fluids.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Whether you are an athlete or not, stay hydrated on these hot summer days. Use #NationalHydrationDay to share on social media.

HISTORY

Founded by SafeTGard Corporation in honor of football Coach Victor Hawkins (September 1, 1964 – June 23, 2012) who invented a mouthguard that releases electrolytes to keep his players hydrated during games and practices. This day honors Coach Hawkins’ contributions to athlete health, safety and success. SafeTGard Corporation founded National Hydration Day to increase awareness of the importance of proper hydration to athletes everywhere. The day was approved by the Registrar at National Day Calendar in 2016.

Don't forget your pets too. They need lots of water during the summer hot months, and to be indoors!!!!!!!!
Thank you Dorothy - that one is a great reminder!

I smoked a spam, for no particular reason.

by Living Tardy G2G6 Pilot (765k points)
Looks Yummy.
I had some with breakfast, Dallace, and it was that.
I remember my dad getting the canned spam and making it for breakfast or making sandwiches. He loved spam.

I hear it's very popular in Hawaii.  There's a famous Hawaiian guitarist who writes haiku about it.  http://www.science20.com/geeks039_guide_world_domination/spam_haiku_caution_spiritual_rather_scientific_value

Regrettably, Keola's website dropped the haiku page some time ago.  crying

indecisionWelcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.indecision

On one of the food shows the high powered chefs had to make an appetizer with spam.  It was amazing all the different ways to use it!

Spam, wonderful Spam!  cool

Here are a few pictures I promised, they are having a rough start. Our grape vines that was planted a few years ago are finally starting to produce. We also planted some beans, tomatoes, and cucumbers. The two hanging baskets are some perennials I wanted cause they are interesting, but I have no clue the namesblush. Then we have the big flower pots that are full of these beauties. Then my sisters wagon wheel, I would love to plant a vine under it and wrap it around as it grows. I have more pictures just haven't got them uploaded yet.

A big thank you to Dorothy for the link on how to upload these. I copied it to a sticky note cause I have a real bad case of CRS. (can't remember s**t). lol

Field Day is over, we did very well. The final results for our team will be announced tomorrow evening so I will let everyone know next weekend. I actually got a new laptop on Saturday morning, well new to me, the short version is we wound up buying two new laptops for the grandkids and took back the one we bought about a month ago, now there should be no more fighting because except for the case colors their computers are identical. I am in the process of donating 3 older laptops and one desktop computers because I can't justify having 6 laptops and 2 desktops for only 2 of us. We will end up with 3 laptops, Hers, Mine and a backup and one desktop for my genealogy and radio work. I am in the process of transferring everything over to the "new" laptop because it is a better machine than the one I was using. So that is going to take some time this week. Well now it is time for a nap, it was a long 27 hours.
by Dale Byers G2G Astronaut (1.7m points)
Hi Dale, New you and your team would do well in the field day! You sound like me, I recently gave away three older laptops ruing XP, Have one new one and two backups that still work. I have not had a desktop for a number of years as they just took up space and gathered dust. I have found even if a little more expensive to repair a high-end laptop does everything a desktop can do and takes up hardly any space. Have a great summer!

Getting a new laptop or desktop is always neat but setting it up just the way you want it to be can take some time!! I know, I just updated mine. New windows, new changes, new apps!! Have fun with that wink

We purchased a new HP Printer and I set it up this week as it is wireless (my first one). Have just always had one I plugged in using a USB cable thought I would update and save the walk to the back room. HP says easy as one, two, three. Nope it is not, have had to uninstall it from my laptop and reinstall the software, setting up the printer to the wireless was not a problem but it just would not connect to my laptop. Now I am not sure but when I used Excel it would not save and would just crash, in the past before the new printer Excel never failed to work. It is always nice to get new electronics but a pain to set them up the way you want.

Ditto to everyone on this chat except maybe the last statement from David Selman one hour ago.

indecisionWelcome everyone to the WikiTree weekend chat.indecision

David, in my case the desktop computer is in my Ham Shack and connected to my radio so in addition to keeping my offline work on it I use it for digital modes and logging. No collecting dust there. Except for the desktop all of the computers in the house are Windows 10, the desktop is Windows 7. We have an HP printer and 2 of the laptops and the desktop computers are also HP, the backup laptop is an ACER. I still have to  install the software for the printer yet so I hope it works out but I don't use the printer much.
Just found out July 2nd we are taking a trip to visit relatives in Indiana, just for 1 or 2 days but since I live on the other side of Ohio it is going to be a bit of a drive. At least there are two of us to share the driving.

Hope you have good driving weather.  Enjoy your visit.smiley !!

Technology is great when it works and a nightmare when it causes those kind of issue...  hope you get it solved soon!
