Cemetery Category Help (Again)

Thank you all for the help yesterday.

I'm making a lot of mistakes trying to learn how to do categories.  I'm glad I know how to laugh at myself.

This morning I tried to make a new cemetery for the City of Hopewell, Virginia.  I've got a nice page, but its not listed under Hopewell and I'm don't know how to get it there.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Appomattox_Cemetery%2C_Hopewell%2C_Virginia

And a reminder to anyone who helps me with this.  Some cities in Virginia are not in Counties.  They are considered "Independent cities" and their local government functions like a county government, too.  Hopewell is one of those - so it will not be in a county.

I would categorize it Category:Hopewell, Virginia and as Category:Hopewell, Virginia, Cemeteries. I checked and both of these categories already exist. There is a City Point National Cemetery already in the Hopewell, Virginia, Cemeteries Category

I know.  How do I write the words/names in the brackets to get it to be on the Hopewell Cemeteries page?

I've read all the instructions, but I would like a more detailed example that those that are provided in the instructions.
I got it now.  I found a comment by Kathy Zipperer(sp?) in another thread that addressed my problem.

I had no idea to put the categories in the big edit box!  Now I do!
[[Category:Hopewell, Virginia, Cemeteries]] no space after colon? I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. I do know that I have made a lot of cemetery categories and every time I do, I have to have my handwritten notes out and another window open with an already categorized cemetery to follow as an example because it is hard for me to wrap my brain around the nesting and I still obsess over getting it right, so I totally understand why you are asking. For my handwritten notes I wrote out examples of one I created and how it needed to connect to the category tree:

[[Category:Liberty Cemetery, Liberty, Nebraska]] The Cemetery Name, the City(county if rural), the State.

-this needs to be connected to the lowest location level so [[Category:Liberty, Nebraska]]

-it also needs to connect to the County Cemetery level so [[Category:Gage County, Nebraska, Cemeteries]]. If the County Cemetery level does not exist yet (the dreaded red print) it would then need to be categorized with location [[Category:Gage County, Nebraska]] and State Cemetery level [[Category:Nebraska Cemeteries]]

In your example it has a City Cemetery level instead of County.

I hope this helps you, if not please ask more questions : )
Ahhh, I get what you were asking now, lol.

Kathryn if you check your previous request for help I specifically mentioned that is how you link them up. Don't feel too bad though. I didn't know either until I looked it up to answer your question. laugh

When in doubt, find something similar and hit that edit button and look. Just don't change anything while you are looking.

Hi All,

See the category now:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Appomattox_Cemetery%2C_Hopewell%2C_Virginia

This is the standard format that I'm familliar with.

Some notes:

Yes, you can have a space after "Category:". It does not affect the category naming, and I put in a space for readability in edit mode.

I change the underscores to be spaces. Again for readability in edit mode, and it does not affect the category naming.

Note that in the cemetery category, I put in the higher-level cemetery category name first, then the category for the city / town.

Note the formatting with the line separators, the bolded name of the cemetery, and indents (using the colon character).

There are separate lines for cemetery name, town / city name, county name, and state and country.

I use a standard text of "Find A Grave Page", with a cemetery link that ends with the numerical cemetery ID number at Find A Grave.

Let me know if you have any cemetery category questions. I'll do my best to answer.
I just copy and paste the category page title (adding brackets) to make sure. I get it right.
