United Empire Loyalists?

Question

I've seen this in a couple sources and on profiles in my lineages. I think that it's supposed to be fighting for the British in the American revolution? (I know I have families that fought on both sides). I have a family branch that moved into Canada for a few generations after the war was over, before my part  of the branch comes back down to Michigan.

are there any tags flags projects or anything else I should be adding to the profile? (I dont know how catagorization works on here yet, but is there one of those?)

For my fourth great grandfather a note on familysearch.org mentions "PAGE 280 Book: Loyalist Lineages of Canada 1783-1983. Published by Generation Press, Author: Toronto Branch "The United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada."" Is there any way I can see the book online to see what information is in it? I've added it as a source on wikitree for now, but I'd like to know what it says.

You can find where the book is available on worldcat.org.  A search of the book on hathitrust.org confirms that a Christopher Hanes is mentioned on page 280. I don't have a copy of the book to see what it says.  There is a reference to a Christopher Haines in "The Old United Empire Loyalist List" from the Eastern District of Williamsburg and was a soldier out of New York. He is also listed in the UELAC.ORG Directory.

A bit more info that might be useful. The one in the Old United Empire Loyalist List was in the Royal Rangers of New York. He appears on muster roll A. and was single and appeared on the second provision list in 1786. To be sure this is your ancestor, you do need a bit more work. To date, no one has certified in the United Empire Loyalist Association of Canada through him.

I'll be sure to do the proper research before confirming it's him. I knew other profiles I'm descended from had UE in front of their name. Then recently I came across the note about the book with his profile and figured it was time to figure out what it was about.

So is the United Empire Loyalist Association of Canada like the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution? 

Would either association mind a descendant being a member of both?

The UEL Association is just another lineage society but with the emphasis on Loyalists. None of the organizations cares if you are members of more than one of them. I just got confirmation this afternoon that my UEL certification has been approved. I'll probably join the SAR as my next task. I'm using it to force me to do sufficient documentation on my lines. UEL isn't a difficult one to get through when compared to DAR.
