Any idea why father has different last name (marriage record says John Slater) or is that just a mistake?

There were rumors he was adopted but have found Stone dna matches.  (Virginia)  Can't trace them back to him though, and another rumor was that we are German.  Not so through dna test.  Cant find John Slater either.  Was also wondering if John Stone was a product of the Coldwater state school in Coldwater, Michigan.

There is a John Stone at Coldwater in 1880

"United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch ( : 26 August 2017), John Stone in household of Charles Seigal, Coldwater, Branch, Michigan, United States; citing enumeration district ED 29, sheet 550B, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 0573; FHL microfilm 1,254,573.

On other pages for Coldwater there is also Theodore Stone, aged about 8 and George Stone aged about 10

Keep in mind that many branches of the Stone family named their first born son John. My oldest brother is John, my Dad was John, my great-grandfather was John, etc.

It's not surprising that there's a John Stone in the census for that area, but what is surprising is there is only one of them.
The specific census location is for an orphanage or other similar institution - there is a page with Superintendent, teachers, seamstresses, laundresses, cottage managers, farmers etc. and then several pages of young children.
I had found this already, but no way to connect-yet.
