Truly much needed! It's these remarkable soldiers that deserve the recognition. I have to confess I haven't seen the movie Glory yet because it's hard for me to imagine a movie about the 54th that didn't know Sergeant Samuel Winnie worked as a hostler, taking care of the horses of Dr. Francis Burdick and other doctors and medical students both before and after the war in Johnstown, New York. I'll watch it one of these days; I've heard there's some truly remarkable acting.
I really hope this work will inspire more creative work about the 54th! I daydream of a TV series featuring not just the soldiers but their family and friends and the lives they lead before and after the war.
