Elizabeth Short, known as the Black Dahlia, was founded gruesomely murdered in Los Angeles in 1947. In death, sensationalist reporters, fiction writers, and film makers turned her into all manner of things she never was in life: a prostitute, a lesbian, pregnant, etc. She seems to have been a normal girl, uncommonly pretty, and she endured quite a lot of heartbreak in her short life (her fiance was killed in a plane crash while serving in the Air Force, less than a week before the Japanese surrendered).
Her killer has never been identified.
