Hi WikiTreers!

imageJoin in on this week's 24-hour Saturday Sourcing Sprint!

It's basically a casual mini Source-a-Thon.

When it's Saturday where you are, get sourcing!
(And quit when it's Sundaysmiley)

Anytime you want to compete for the Weekly Winners badge, click answer at the bottom of this post, We use the Challenge Tracker to record the profiles we sources.

Tell us about your successes, discrepancies, stories that tug at your heart strings, and new amazing sources. We have a Google Hangout if you'd like to join us. It will be as busy or quiet as we make it.

  • All profiles improved must come from the Unsourced categories or be already present on WikiTree and only have links to other profiles, links to search results from another genealogy website, or the words "Ancestry tree," "Geni.com," "Pedigree Resource Files" from FamilySearch, and the like. Do not delete these items as they can provide clues for other researchers.
  • If you cannot find any sources, create a Research Notes section, list where you tried to find records, and add four tildes to the end of your note as a date stamp (you won't see it until you save). Do not remove the Unsourced Template and do not use the tracker or count in your tally. Example:
    • "Looked for John in the US Census records for 1900-1940 and couldn't find him on FamilySearch or Ancestry"
  • Sources citations need to be as full and specific as possible. Tell where, what, who, and when, as well as where was the source was found. Do not delete existing items in the Sources area as they can provide clues for other researchers.
    • Examples of full and specific source citations:
      • Escambia County, Florida, Marriage Record, John Jones and Mary Smith, 13 Jun 1888; Ancestry
      • 1900 US Census, North Carolina, Union County, Ben Brokaw in the household of Jane Smithgall, page 13A; FamilySearch
      • Find A Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com : accessed 18 May 2018), memorial page for Bessie B Phillips (1912–1978), Find A Grave Memorial no. 130051313, citing West Virginia Memorial Gardens, Calvin, Nicholas County, West Virginia, USA ; Maintained by Sharon Bowers Curry (contributor 47542086).

See the Sprint Help Page for full details.

When you save the profile, a green bar for the Challenge Tracker will appear at the top. Due to the security changes for the implementation of GDPR regulations, unlisted profiles are not eligible for challenge tracking.

For all others, click the Challenge Tracker button, add or verify your WikiTreeID, select a pre-defined comment or add your own to indicate which type(s) of source(s) you added, put a check mark in the "Saturday Sourcing Sprint" box, and click "Add Action." If you participate in the Monthly Sourcerers' Challenge you can click both boxes. For visual learners, this YouTube video starting at about the 4.30 minute mark will explain how to use the tracker (earlier parts of the video explain how to find sources and add the citations to profiles).

You can track your progress on the Challenge Tracker report.

Don't forget to removed the Unsourced template if you are able to add a source!

General question about sourcing: (I've found I kinda love doing this!)

When you add the sources, do you also need to add a bio? (That takes forever but I've been doing it so far. Just wondering what the general "rule" is.)

Do you need to join a team? So far I've just been adding sources for fun ;)
by E Childs G2G6 Pilot (133k points)

I don't believe you have to add a bio - but usually when I source I create a basic bio with in-line sources and try to add as many sources to the profile as possible.

And you don't have to be part of a team if you don't want to.

Hi, E, thanks for joining us. The Sprints are about getting at least one verifiable source on every profile. Writing a bio is a nice touch but there's no requirement to do so.

oops, forgot to answer your Challenge Team question. No need for a team while you are participating in the Sprints or Sourcerers' Challenge. If we do a Source-A-Thon in October (not my job, man) and you want to participate, you'll need a team at that point.

Tomorrow is my youngest granddaughter's last T-ball game, so I should be able to do a little sourcing.  More next Saturday.

I'm in!  I've been researching Sherwoods and Meads this week in early New England.  Some of them moved around a bit -- yipes!

Excellent, Janine. Good luck tracking your movers down.
Surprisingly, a NEHGS Webinar about early Vermont noted that people left almost as soon as they arrived; the population for Vermont peaked in 1820 and has not increased since then!  Yes, my Mead family was in Vermont -- but they started in Connecticut.  My Payne family started in Lebanon, Connecticut, lived in Vermont, and moved to Nova Scotia, only to die in Staten Island, New York.

Let's ask our WikiTree genealogists about their ancestors' meandering trails; I'll bet I'm not the only one who gets cross-eyed from time to time!
