CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Weekend Chat is for everyone. It's a place to catch up on what people are up to and to share what you've been doing.  New members can say hello, introduce themselves, ask questions, and meet each other.  Our seasoned members can share progress or successes from their projects, give tips and advice, or chime in on hot topics.

Post as many answers and comments as you wish. It doesn't hurt anyone to post a lot, and enjoy the multitude of topics.

Ohyeah drain them out and let that sediment that builds up clear out of there - we only do it once or twice a year - must be real hard water to have to once a month!  No fun to do without hot water but we find ways to make do
How did we get 2 weekend chats?
We have two? Did I mistitle this? Pretty sure everyone got the memo.....

Oh. Dude, the other one was from last year!
someone posted on 2017. so now it has 1 new answer and about 5 comments. I put wrong chat in red with green background. LOL
Pfft. That's sad and hilarious at the same time.. Too bad we can't delete posts.

Steven, if you will send me the URL/address of the chat then we can see about closing that chat. Thank you, David

I found the second chat, LOL, and asked for it to be closed. smiley

Yes thank you Chris for hosting the Fourth of July WikiTree Weekend chat. Also Chris you should use that for the title of this weekend chat since Wednesday is July the fourth. Also for hosting for Dorothy since that water heater problem

angelWelcome everyone to the Fourth of July WikiTree Weekend chat.

Hope all of you will have a safe Fourth of July.angel

I went back through most of 2018 and 2017 and closed chats where I could or asked those who hosted to close them.  Every now and then there is one that sneaks in.   Sounds like one of those was found...

But, I have recently seen someone be able to post to a closed one.  I don't know if it lets you do that if you had already posted on the thread, if it was a momentary glitch, or a timing issue of that person posting as we were closing something...

I just closed the 2017 chat!  wow, what a coincidence...   no wonder people were posting there surprise

Hi Weekend Chatters, you can always find the link to the current and upcoming Weekend Chat at the All About the Weekend Chat Pagesmiley

I counter that with a song just for my ladies

The Husband Song

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vcPMKD8GFkI

 Song Lyrics by Sean Morey

Ladies and gentleman, The Man Song!

He’s the man. He’s the man.

I don’t take no crap from anybody else…

but you

I wear the pants around here…

when I finish with your laundry

Cause I’m a guy you don’t wanna fight…

when I say “jump”, you say “yeah right”

Cause I’m the man of this house…

until you get home

He’s the man. He’s the man.

When I say goes around here…

right out the window

But I don’t wanna hear a lot of whining…

so I’ll shut up

The sooner you learn who’s boss around here…

the sooner you can give me my orders, dear

Cause I’m head honcho around here…

but it’s all in my head

He’s the man. He’s the man.

And I can have sex anytime…

that you want

Cause I’m a man who has needs…

but they’re not that important

And don’t expect any flowers from me…

Cause if I’m not mistaken, you prefer jewelry

I’m the king of my castle…

when you’re not around

He’s the man. He’s the man.

And I’ll drink and watch sports…

whenever I wanna get in trouble

And I’ll come home, when I’m good and ready…

to sleep on the couch

Cause a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do…

and I’m gonna do what you tell me to

Because I’m top dog around here…

but I’ve been neutered

He’s the man. He’s the man!

You the man!

The Husband song? I don't know. More ladies tend to like Chris Evans more than this guy.
Eddie, you are not allowed to post things here that’ll give ammunition to my wife!

Uh, yes, Honey, I’m getting of the computer right now!
Still sticking with that bit from Cap. And the Avengers theme.
I always remind my husband that what is his is mine and what is mine is mine so it is all mine!  He just shakes his head, smiles indulgently and goes and turns on a sports program...   All kidding aside I am so blessed to have him in my life.  But he is fun to give just a little bit of trouble to....now and then...

Happy Birthday USA Puzzle

1. How old is the USA?

 2. What other 2 countries celebrate the 4th of July as a day of Independence?

3. Which state flag had a Palm Tree and a Crescent Moon on a blue field?

4. Which state flag is described as:  The goddess Liberty holds a pole with a Liberty Cap on top. Liberty stands for freedom. At her feet is a discarded crown, representing freedom from England at the end of the revolutionary war. On the right is the goddess, Justice. She wears a blindfold and carries the scales of justice. Meaning that everyone receives equal treatment under the law. The state motto "Excelsior" on a white ribbon expresses the idea of reaching upward to higher goals. On the shield a sun rises over the Hudson highlands and ships sail the Hudson river. Above the shield is an eagle resting on a globe representing the Western Hemisphere.

5. Which state has a flag with geometric designs from the family crest of the Calvert and Crossland families?

6. What document is identified with July 4?

7. 2 future US Presidents were members of the committee to draft the Declaration of Independence.  Who were they?

8. Did 1777 have a fireworks display on July 4?

9.    Did Thomas Jefferson use a “laptop”?

10.  Which 3 US Presidents died on July 4?

11.   What year was July 4 made a national holiday?

12.   What US President was born on the 4th of July?

13.  Name the original 13 colonies the 13 Colony Flag represent:

by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (756k points)
Thank you for the puzzle!
Chris, did you throw question #2 in as a trick question, or are there really 2 other countries.
Not my questions. These are all Laura. =) And yes there are two other countries. Google 'em.
Answers are in the answer folder at

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/rqo8mt2eobujwgd/AAAzB3IGNHqNKXBfdE985NBZa?dl=0

And there is also both a docx and pdf version of the puzzle without the answers in the main folder.
Thank-you Laura, The reason I asked Chris the question is because I thought it was only the USA. See this link for the other 2 countries you have in your answers. The other 2 are not listed as the 4th of July.

thank-you, I enjoy your puzzles.
I am scrambling to get them done right now.  I inherited a bunch of work I did not plan for that is taking me away from WikiTree for 4 to 6 weeks...hopefully no longer!  But after seeing all the forms I need to do which I had no idea I needed to do... my workload just increased!
Question 8, yeah, there were fireworks but they weren't very pretty. Wars seldom are.

Thanks again for marvelous puzzles and tips Laura while you are busy. I know what you mean because of the following week the Barnetts had and next week also.

Tips from the desk of Laura Bozzay:

1,  This has been a week filled with spreadsheets, eye strain, and frayed nerves.  So I occasionally took a break to clean up some of the suggestions I inherited when I adopted a number of profiles.  I now have less than 100 to still fix.  So, remember to run your suggestions list at least once a month.  Since we are at the end of one month and the beginning of another month this is a good time to set as a reminder to do that.  Every profile cleaned up makes the tree healthier.

2.  While dealing with the spreadsheets I often have the TV on in the background and this week there has been a lot of angry people on various news shows or opinion shows.  Civility is something we value most highly on WikiTree.  So remember, DWWA  (Don’t Wiki When Angry).  Or as my grandmother used to say, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.   And the Golden Rule is the best advice ever… Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

3.  Skill sets and understanding of WikiTree and how to use it.  We have experts and we have newbies and all have valuable contributions to make.  We need to remember that something that is so well known to an expert may be totally new information to a newbie.  So when reading some of the questions in G2G please remember we were all newbies once.

4.  Remember why we do this… to preserve information about our families for others who come after us or to share with new found cousins and others who have an interest in things we are interested in.  So take some time to review 10 profiles a week and over time you will have much better profiles.
by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (756k points)
Laura's tips are always so awesome!
Yes, they are.
Thank you!  I just pass on some of the learning I have done on this site!
23 hours later and no one has made a "I have a particular set of skills" joke. Y'all are slipping. =)
I thought the golden rule was "Do unto others before they can do unto you"???????
No I think that is Van Helsings rule and I don't think we have any vampires or werewolves on WikiTree...  a few ghosts maybe....  but no vampires.... or werewolves....
No vampires because we wouldn’t know what to put for death date. But we could discuss it on G2G
Your tips are always excellent and provide great information.
Thanks Dean,  I invite others to post things they have learned too!

Thanks again for marvelous puzzles and tips Laura while you are busy. I know what you mean because of the following week the Barnetts had and next week also. And the Golden Rule is the best advice ever… Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  That is what God said in the Bible.

Happy CANADA Day!!

Here is a Canada Day Quiz

https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2018/06/29/take-the-canada-day-quiz-and-test-your-knowledge-of-all-things-canadian.html

Thank you Chris for hosting this weekend!!
by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
Hi Robynne - thank you!
I took the quiz, and finished with 24 out of 50. Most of my answers were guesses though. I doubt I really KNEW 10 answers.
I passed, but barely!  I did not look anything up just took it cold...It was hard!
Isn't Canada day tomorrow? like 3 days before the 4th of July? They just had to get ahead of us somehow. LOL
Yes, Canada had plenty of time to choose the best date. LOL

4 July was "chosen" back in 1776.

The Canadian government probably chose to sign their confederation into being on 1 July 1867 just to annoy the Americans!!  LOL

angelWelcome everyone to the Fourth of July WikiTree Weekend chat.

Hope all of you will have a safe Fourth of July.angel

I did the same as Jelena 24 out of 50. Most of my answers like Jelena were guess thought. I also doubt I really knew 10 answers too.

Family tree created for the man who played Zorro,

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Catalano-277 , Armando Catalano! aka Armando Williams.

To my surprise he was Italian. Huh. I did not know that. Cool!
by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (756k points)
Very cool!

Growing up I watched this show and loved it.  My favorite in it was of course, the horse!  Tornado (occasionally Toronado)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tornado_(horse)

Zorro was cool. He was the inspiration for Batman, I believe. And it was a Zorro movie the Waynes saw before they were killed in Crime Alley.

Ditto to what everyone said on this chat.

For those in the United States, they get to celebrate the 4th of July starting this weekend and then all through the middle of next week since the 4th isn't until Wednesday!!

So from your friends and me from Nashville, Tennessee......

by Dorothy Barry G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)

Thank you Dorothy! We're staying in this year, but will still get to see fireworks smiley

Ditto to what Dorothy said except from Knoxville, Lenoir City and Loudon, Tennessee. I have a private showing where I live, neighbors around my house shoots them off and so I get to see about 4 or 5 different angles and people does them. I am very lucky where I am living to be able to see all of those different peoples and angles of them from my front yard from a bench.

Hi Herbert. I love your origami!  Happy Friday

Thanks, Mindy!

LOL Eddie Mothra creeped me out so bad when I was a kid.  Not sure I can relive that.

Bonus Jurassic critter:  My first-ever origami:

Nice!
Still better than the dinos in the newest Jurassic Park movie. =)

That's why I used blue.  cool

I saw his dude on Transformers: The Last Knight just last night!
Swoop? Yeah, I had him as a kid. I think we sold him along with a bunch of the other classic Transformers.
I had to look that up.  I'm so old and unhip.  OTOH, I had a real one as a pet when I was a kid.
It's okay. I'm here for all your '80s and '90s pop culture needs. =D
Wonderful job... dinosaurs are a big hit with my two granddaughters.

There is a cool PBS show called Dinosaur Train that is lots of fun!

http://pbskids.org/dinosaurtrain/
Thanks Laura!
Those are great!
Thanks, Kay!

Ditto to what everyone said here Herbert. I missed you origami when you were not on the chat. Your first-ever origami was pretty good I think myself.

Also this is the Fourth of July WikiTree Weekend Chat not the Jurassic Weekend Chat that is next weekend chat.

Hey, everyone and welcome to my third Weekend Chat! These things really do come in threes, huh? Well, there's not much to report. This week I helped a cousin triangulate DNA with me to our common ancestors, Pierre Cadran and Eulalie Bibeau. She's a fourth cousin. So triangulation was needed. I also found her ancestor's picture and wedding certificate. From NH.

I would say it was weird that they got married in Exeter but lived in Haverhill. But, Exeter really isn't THAT far from Haverhill. New England towns are close and small. Remember that. There's your tip. Never underestimate the size of New England. Six small states. One wicked attitude. =)

Now as for me I am gonna beat the heat and work on a video. Working on a review of Action Comics #1000. Huge milestone issue. If anyone has a copy of #1, you got gold in your hands. GOLD! Provided it's in mint condition.

Take care and enjoy the chat!
by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (756k points)
Have fun with your video Chris!

Well done with the DNA, Chris!

Speaking of things coming in threes, today on G2G we learned that Richard III had three....  Never mind.  devil

Thanks! I should probably note that I hit 100k points but I think it's kinda noticeable. Richard III had three what? Wives? That's nothing compared to Henry VIII. Dude killed most of 'em.

Will have as much fun as I can editing. I get tired of hearing my voice after a while.
And I have hit 300,000 points....
I'll be catching up somehow. Not sure how.
Congrats to both of you on these milestones!
Thanks!
I need to know what triangulation is all about - my middle daughter had her DNA done for a class in college - I messed up trying to download it to get it so it can upload here - will try again soon, going to get a kit and trying to decide If I want to test me or my son -

It does confirm a lot of my work as I see names on her cousins list over at ancestry that I used to correspond with in the message boards when I started doing this whole family tree thing on a Windows 98 computer with a dial up modem near twenty years ago including one cousin - that I now have on facebook
You are looking for 3 people not closing related (like not siblings or parent and child) who match at a minimum of 7cm with overlapping SNP segments of 700 SNP or more on the same chromosome.   To find this you have to be able to run reports at the chromosome and SNP level.  GedMatch has good ones and FTDNA has that ability.  Ancestry does not.  I think 23and me does because one of the adoptees I am currently working with sent me a report out of 23andme that did show that.  Not sure how she got it.

angelWelcome everyone to the Fourth of July WikiTree Weekend chat.

Hope all of you will have a safe Fourth of July.angel

Well I have to get that one cousin on wikitree- she will love it, been meaning to anyhow - she has DNA and my daughter too and I will see is some of the other cousins are up for it - my inlaws did theirs but it is on a site I don't have access too I think - I better check

Thank you, Chris for hosting this weekend’s chat.

Rant: FRUSTRATION! I want to have a sit down my some of my ancestors, not to ask them questions (though that would be obvious), but get on to them for not writing everything down!

Rave: now that I’ve gotten the above out of my system (and I’m sure you’re getting tired of hearing it from me), I’m going to put a hold on trying to break through those many brick walls and follow Chris’ excellent advice taken from Laura Bozzay listed below. I really do need to do what I can do, and that is to improve the profiles I manage, going through my suggestions list, sourcing better. Thanks, Chris, for getting me back on track.

Blah 1: I’ve started a job at a plant nursery, right up my alley. It’s only 24 hours a week at minimum wage, but I didn’t want a full-time position anywhere. Got a wedding coming up in January and the princess wants a princess wedding. Need $$$! (Donations?)

Blah 2: Whoever recommended King Hereafter by Dorothy Dunnett - curse you! Now I’m hooked and have to buy more of her books! :-) (My new job is coming in handy. I’ll tell my daughter to cut back on flowers.)

Blah 3: Please allow to take a moment to thank all of you for making WikiTree such a wonderful experience. Even when not directly helping me, your questions and answers assist me in my growth as a genealogist. One of my favorite things is getting a note from someone who has used the Relationship to Me function to see if we’re related. (Yes, we’re all related, but this makes it come home.)

Blah 4: And while I’m in a gushing moment, I’ve truly enjoyed looking at profiles of G2G participants and seeing amazing people with amazing research and amazing ancestry. It’s great! Personal emails have helped me get to know some a little better, John N. and Shaun D. coming immediately to mind.

Ok, that’s enough! (My elementary schools report cards regularly had a bad mark beside “Refrains from unnecessary talking.”) Is it any wonder that public speaking comes naturally to me? At the drop of a hat!

Have a great weekend, cousins!

by Pip Sheppard G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
Haha! A hint of nobility in the line and a connection is made!

Cool, Dallace!

You funny, Chris. I was that guy, but in the guise of a redneck farm boy who gained any social graces he now has by marrying up, way up! Sometimes, people still shake their heads.

I had to check further out - Mindy and Pip are 20th cousins once removed

Mindy Silva and Pip Sheppard are both descendants of John Welles.

Howdy cousin! smiley

Hey Pip didn't you hear Nobility brings out the relatives you never knew you had. lol
I aim to please, Pip. =) Now no. Don't discount farm boys. Sometimes they can turn out to be Jedi knights and sometimes they can turn out to be the greatest hero Earth has ever known. =)

Anyway, I checked 30 Gens back. Pip...Apparently we are 19th cousins twice removed.

Wow that's far back.

angelWelcome everyone to the Fourth of July WikiTree Weekend chat.

Hope all of you will have a safe Fourth of July.angel

Pip Sheppard is 21 Degrees from Linda Barnett via connection finder  (I am Barnett-3517). We're not related  so just need some more good profiles. .

Mindy, you prove the point: his really is One Tree! Glad to meet you, Cuz.
Dallace, ain’t it the truth!
I’ll say, Chris. I’ve looked at these responses and 19-20 seems to be the average. That’s a lot of years! But even as far out as we cousins are, I’m in touch with more of the “far out” ones than my own first cousins.

Linda! You’re kidding! You need more(!) profiles to work on?!?

+18 votes

This week on WikiTree I continued to reduce my watchlist and actually found death dates for 4 of the 6 unlisted profiles I worked on. I also opened up the privacy settings for a few profiles and found actual death dates for most of a family that when their profiles were created in 2012 almost all of them had a date of "after 1930", some died 50 to 80+ years later than 1930 but all that I found died well before 2012. As promised The results for my radio club's Field Day, We made over 600 contacts in a 24 hour period using only 3 radios. The furthest contact was in France, we were in Northeast Ohio, but we did make contacts in almost every state in the USA and most canadian provinces along with Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Not bad for a group that are not contestors but more of a social group. Now it is time to go pick up a granddaughter. She and other commitments will keep me busy until at least Tuesday so have a happy 4th for those of you in the USA and a nice weekend to all.

by Dale Byers G2G Astronaut (1.7m points)
Dale I think you need a vacation from your life!  I can identify with that!
I am retired, That means you work harder for less money.
Great job on Field Day. Your message surely doesn't convey how much fun you had.
Kay, we had one mast break while we were putting it up and it hit my head with a glancing blow. I was wearing a hard hat so no major damage done, to me at least, but it did cause one antenna to break and caused me to leave early but it was fun.
you may be retired but it looks like you may need a secretary and a roadie at times there Dale!

I agree with Navarro Dale and Laura.

Happy Week End to All!

It has been a busy week. I celebrated the 5th anniversary of my liver transplant on Wed., my daughter received a full  academic scholarship to college on Thurs, I sourced a bunch of profiles & my flowers sprang to life (which is good, since I planned this area of the garden to bloom around July 1- my mom's birthday).

What's new with you?

by Doug Lockwood G2G Astronaut (2.6m points)
edited by Doug Lockwood

Congrats on the anniversary Doug! I just love the flowers in bloom this time of year! smiley

Congrats on the scholarship! And I am glad you're here with us to celebrate the anniversary of the transplant!

Congrats on both, Doug.

The way you worded it, Doug, made it sound like your flowers bloomed because you sourced some profiles. It that is true, then I wonder what other benefits there are from sourcing profiles! smiley

Wow you have a green thumb in the garden, your daughter has one in getting that scholarship, and we are glad your transplant is doing so well!
Glad for your good news! Always enjoy pictures of your beautiful garden.
Good news on every front.  I hope all continues as the future unfolds.

Ditto to what everyone said here on this chat. Also Doug the pictures are great.

This week I worked hard with Susie MacLeod to get the the Portugal Project moving in the right direction. We are almost ready to make it an official full project, Hooray! Bob and I have been researching people like crazy to hit our goals. Very exciting stuff!

Other than that my only excitement was getting another cousin to come over to WikiTree. He seems to love it, and I'm happy to have him here. We've done a lot of collaborating on our own this year - and this is the perfect place to continue that!

On the homefront we are waiting... a few more weeks until the family reunion for dad's side of the family. Mom's was last month and pretty quiet. Dad's side is a little rowdier wink. and always lots of fun.

Dorothy - I'm SO glad you are safe and sound after that water heater scare!!! Your angels were working overtime last night.angel

by Mindy Silva G2G Astronaut (1.1m points)
Glad to hear it's being made official soon! Right now it looks pretty good.  Not sure what else you can do. Welcome to the chat!

Thanks Chris! I'm pretty sure we'll have the remaining profiles this week. The rest of the requirements are met. Very exciting! I'm so thrilled Susie brought me into this project. smiley

Glad you made sense of that grammar malfunction. I'm a writer, right? *looks at over 300 comics* Either that or I like spriting funny pictures.

So, what's left to get the okay? Some linquisa? Please? Not saying that because I smell it being cooked next door or anything....

I think it's the funny pictures.

A total of 200 profiles and we're almost there. That, and the linguisa.  And maybe some Arroz de Pato. Are you sure they're cooking linguisa and not Alheira?  Hmmm, now I'm hungry smiley

Oh, they were making linguisa, Mindy. Smelled SO GOOD! They've been next door for years. I went to school with one of their sons. I see him every now and then.

Just got back.  Thanks Chris for bringing up the chat!  I am still knee deep in spreadsheets and I need to get help with all the forms I need to fill out...  never a dull moment these days!

I did manage to do a few more suggestions so now I have under 100 from the adopted profiles.  No good deed goes unpunished as the saying goes...but the tree is healthier.
by Laura Bozzay G2G6 Pilot (824k points)
No problem. =D Glad I could help! Glad you got work done! Keep up the good work!
Good luck with those forms Laura!! Let us know if you need any Wiki help, we're here for you
Thanks Mindy!  The guest hosting of the Weekend Chat has been a huge help!
Yeah, who is that guy who makes sarcastic and witty comments much to the enjoyment of the older gen here on this site? =)
Hmmm... is that Eddie?
I dunno.  I think it's.... that Crisp guy? lol...
Crispy on the outside? Yeah, that just about covers how I feel. It is HOT out there.

Where in the World?

When doing my wife's family tree I developed several contacts in Croatia. One of them tracked down her family's ancestral home, located in the tiny village of Podkobuljak.

Sojat Ancestral Home in Podkobuljak Croatia

by Bart Triesch G2G6 Pilot (268k points)

Very cool!  If only we could give Best Answers.  yes

Bart! This is an exciting find!! I see old houses like this all the time and wish I could restore them all. Oh, the stories they could tell! Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks Herbert!
Thank you Pip!
does the village now have a different name? I can't find it even when I use google.hr

Jelena, try googling it with an alternative spelling, "Potkobiljak Croatia." And google with maps. It is such a tiny village it doesn't show up much. also, it is near the town of Lic Croatia. If you google that you should see some hits for Potkobiljak or Podkobuljak which sits just below it.

Town names I usually google with maps, and balcanian towns I only google with google maps Serbia. With the spelling Potkobiljak I found it. The other day (when I found the adress book from the mid 70s), I googled the street where one of my relatives lived in Split. But first I had to google how the street is named today, as there were tens of streets renamed after the seperation of Croatia. But eventually I found it. smiley

Downright fascinating!  Thanks for sharing it!
Actually the "tens of streetnames" is only in Split. And renaming streets or places is quite usual in former Yugoslavia. That can lead to misunderstandings even between mum and me, because she remembers the Belgrade street names from the communist time and I only know the new names....
What a great find! It sounds like an interesting story.

Today is....

NATIONAL WAFFLE IRON DAY – June 29    (who has one of these??)

National Waffle Iron Day June 29

NATIONAL WAFFLE IRON DAY

Waffle lovers finally have their day of recognition on June 29, which is the day National Waffle Iron Day is observed.  Some people enjoy their waffles plain with syrup, but we like ours topped with berries, whipped cream, and syrup.  Who knew a simple machine would make such a big impact on our lives!

The waffle iron is usually two honeycomb-patterned metal plates hinged together.  A person pours or places the dough between the heated plates and then closes it to bake the waffle.  Other patterns are also currently on the market in modern time to reflect pop culture as the waffles are baked into famous animated characters and other shapes.

Waffle irons got their start in the 14th century in the Low Countries. Even the earliest designs that were used over an open fire would have elaborate designs such as coats of arms and religious symbols.

The first patent in the USA for a waffle iron was in 1869, submitted by Cornelius Swarthout.  In 1911, General Electric produced a prototype electric waffle iron.  The first electric waffle iron was available to the general public in 1918.

Nike Co-Founder Bill Bowerman, an Oregon Track Coach at the time, used his wife’s waffle iron to create a sole for footwear that would be light weight but also grip a surface.  This design would soon be called the “Moon Shoe” in 1972 and the “Waffle Trainer” in 1974.  His waffle iron shoe helped spur the growth of Blue Ribbon Sports / Nike.

Waffle iron makers today offer a large variety of choices from waffle irons that make very thin waffles to those that can make waffle cones.

Might this be Cornelius?

Swarthout-176
My granddaughter and I shared a waffle (blueberry) today.  I get the edges she gets all the good insides!
But, Laura, the edges are the best because they’re crunchy!
But she only has two top and bottom front teeth!  So right now the softer is better for her!

Pip, interesting question which brought out more questions and two requests for merges plus more in future due to misspelling of LNAB.

See: proposed a merge of Dudley-516 and Dubley-1

and:  proposed a merge of Swarthout-176 and Swartwout-146

Notice sources on Dudley-516 and Swartwout-146 !!!

(Would you wanta adopt them to fix LNAB??? )

I used to make the heart waffles for my girls when they were younger. Sometimes we would have a 'breakfast' dinner - I miss those! heart

Goodness Pip I started looking that up and changes and merges and almost got sucked in to that branch - but my better senses kicked in- no I have to stick to my list not add to it - ya almost got me though  - 176

Dorothy, you’re killing me! (But I will look at it and see what’s up.) smiley

Pip, and Navarro, my cousin (Sandra Davidson) decided to charm in and try to merge some profiles of Cornelius N. Swartwout Swartwout-146 (now Swarthout-294) and his duplicate children to correct LNAB for this month's contributions. Sources indicated spelling to be Swarthout for those profiles. She had to adopt them to change the spelling.

Looks like she got most of them fixed up smiley until you get to the parents "Nathan Swarthout (Swarthout-177)" and his 32 children,  & then his father "Cornelius Swarthout" and beyondsurprise.

That will most likely need to be looked at by the profile managers and project leader from New Netherland Settlers WikiTree . (Several different LNAB spellings and tons of duplicate children).frown

So I couldn't tell you if "Cornelius" mentioned in Today is (jun 29th)... Waffle Iron creator, is one of those people.

Ok, found

Cornelius Swartwout
Born July 25, 1839[1]
Westerlo, New York
Died December 17, 1910 (aged 71)
Kings County, New York
Nationality American
Known for patented an improved waffle iron

Diagrams of Swartwout's waffle iron

Cornelius Swartwout (July 25, 1839 – December 17, 1910) was an American inventor who filed an early US patent related to waffle irons.

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornelius_Swartwout

Note: Haven't connected this Cornelius to the group of those needing editing/merging etc.

I just looked at Cornelius’ father, Nathan, and believe me, this is the worst mess I’ve seen on WikiTree (though others might find worse examples)! I don’t think I can pull this one off. I’ve got a gedcom download I’m working on. This one is going to take someone whose tree is absolutely complete with every ancestor for the past 20 generations on the tree and every detail sourced, and no more research to do!! cheeky smiley Holy cow!!!

Sounds like a job for the Arborists to me.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Arborists
See? I just shut that tab right down - my Swartwouts are enough of a pain without these ones being all duplicated and source poor and connected wrong, I need a bigger whiteboard if I am to try and untangle that - and I am still with the three Elizabeth Moores and two Thomas Whites thing - not done, and my dang Dunshees - nope not even commiting to that

Well I didn't get nothing done this past week. I reckon it's good to have goals though. It seemed to go fast but not fast enough for my DNA results. The estimate is starting Wednesday that they'll be ready but who knows. Last couple days been fighting a stomach flu of some kind so it's like headache, bones and muscles hurt. But this too shall pass. That's what I find enjoying about genealogy. There no time frame to get anything done. Well I don't have nothing more to say. So have a great week. And have a safe Holiday (For my American Cousins)

As we come upon July 4th I'd like to thank all the many veterans who served and who are serving this great country. Who where and are willing to pay the ultimate price. yes

And when the results are in... the work begins!

Login and check each day.  Sometimes they post a day or two earlier than they tell you....

Yes we owe a huge debt of gratitude to all our service men and women past and present.

Congrats on the dna test Steve! The waiting is the hardest. Make sure to upload the results to gedmatch.com when you get them, to get the most out of your test. And of course, add the test on WikiTree wink

Feel better. Those ancestors will always be there...

The waiting is the hard part but it is worth it. Just remember to be polite when you talk to DNA matches. =D

Get well, soon!

@Laura I feel like I check the website every 4-5 hours just hoping the status changes before I get the email. I have noticed that the status changes and sometimes it's a few hours before an email is sent.

@Mindy I got gedmatch on my favorites bar right next to wikitree and ancestry so I ready to go. (See @Chris)

@Chris.  I'm a bit of a pessimist when it comes to completely new things. I had a horrible dream the other night = No Results broken heart Oh my I was hatched cheeky Of course I will be nice unless you forgot to bring me coffee devil

Yeah I think you see the results faster online than waiting for them to notify you.  Hopefully it will be soon!

Happy weekend everybody,

This week mum and I sorted out some stuff - mostly electric and electronic stuff that doesn't work anymore. And while doing that, some really old things appeared. Like for example an address book from the mid-1970s where mum wrote down addresses and phone numbers of friends and family. When I looked through it I found hints especially for my balcanian family.

Thanks God I taught mum not to throw anything away which could tell me a bit about the family.

You never know what you'll find. I checked out my parents' wedding guest list recently and some of the distant cousins I found on Ancestry had ancestors who either were there or were invited. Was really cool.
Some weeks ago I found the "wedding book" of my second cousin once removed. He lived in then-time East Germany and we were allowed by the authorities to go to the wedding. My greatuncle had written a poem with verses about literally every guest who was at the wedding. When I read that poem I got some clues about the family. And if it only was: "The grandma of the bride was still alive when the wedding took place."
Treasure hunting!   Good job!

I am going to take my first Ancestry DNA test this weekend. Got it Monday and I just haven't had a chance to get to it.
by Thomas Fuller G2G6 Mach 9 (93.3k points)
Good luck, Tom! Having taken one myself I found the wait being the most frustrating. But, once you see it all the pieces go into place. Please share your findings and welcome to the chat!
Hi, everyone.  I survived the trip to Seattle last weekend.  My daughter got a photo of herself with her screen heart throb (Loki from the Avengers, aka Tom Hiddleston).  Today I will take her to have it framed.  I learned that a co-pilot when driving in Seattle is essential.

I finished a quilt back in red, white and blue.  It has swine attorneys on it in pinstripe suits with briefcases and briefs that read "grunt grunt sue."  I added borders top and bottom with capital T's and stars and stripes.  The top will be 2" squares, over 1000 of them in 6 1/2" blocks.

Oh, and I reached and surpassed the milestone of 10,000 contribution points since January.
Way to go, Margaret! 10,000+!

My mom just finished a quilt. Beautiful! Soon as she was done, went and bought more material for another!
Thomas we have real live DNA experts here on WikiTree.  When you get those results and if you have questions make sure to tap the members of the DNA Project.

Quilts are so wonderful.... I inherited a bunch of them and let my daughterinlaws pick from them and my granddaughter who was old enough to pick (she chose one with big yellow flowers with green stems)  She says it is her garden quilt.
Congrats on the dna test! I know my own opened up so much for me!
Congrats on the dna, the points and the quilt Margaret!

Ditto to everyone here on this chat.

I just got done baking five dozen cookies for refreshments for a work bee
to hopefully be held tomorrow at our local cemetery.  The weather is to
be unexpectedly hot and most of our volunteers are in the 60s age range and not used to heavy work.  I don't know how many of the downed gravestones will get set upright, but each one that is will escape the ever
encroaching grass.  Some have been elevated to a bed of gravel or small stones because they are cracked and in too bad shape.  Our cemetery
association president and his wife try to do around five a year but it is also a thankless job.  I recently hired a a monument company to reset my greatgrandfathers stone.  It was one of the old style, three inches thick and too hard for Andy and wife to do.  I was quoted a price of $200 and ended up charged $300 because they had to bring their own water for the cement base.   We are a small cemetery without access to water
(unless you want to use a pail on a rope and try to scoop some up from a small creek 25 feet down a brushy hillside behind the cemetery).

What kind of cookies?

Yes keeping cemeteries nice is hard work.

(Sorry I originally managed to post this to the answer above!)

Oatmeal raisin.  I made a batch of chocolate chip last night while the
house was cool but apparently the baking powder was too old and they are more of the consistency of a ginger snap.  Will offer them to the two grandsons up the road, no one bakes up there any more.
That sounds like lots of work, both the cookies and the cemetery.

Have you tried to see if there might be a local Scout troup who would work on the cemetery as a project? I believe that's how the cemetery where my ggg grandfather is buried (in Onondaga County) was revived from its abandoned state.
We are woefully short on children in the area so no troops are local.
The work bee is really to do heavy work of trying to reset some of the
downed stones which is really beyond what we would want most of
the scouts to do.  Andy keeps the grass mowed and we are lucky to have had the nature aspects under control by Andy, his father, and his sons.
This is the first work bee in about seven years on the stones.  I know some scouts did help a couple of cemetery reclaimations in the area and did a fantastic job.  Sometimes they went so far as to install flags, fences, benches, etc.

Ditto to and agree with everyone here on this chat. The Leonard Family takes up money every summer to have someone to mow and look after the family cemetery and we have a account set up with a bank for that purpose.

Welcome to the weekend everyone. It sounds like we can sum up the weather in the US in one word.. HOT!

This week on WikiTree I've tried to do an imitation of a Golden Retriever puppy. Chase one leaf, get distracted and chase a different one, then another, and finally drop in exhaustion after chasing a squirrel up a tree.

I did learn how to add a sticker, even if I did keep jumping back and forth between my husband's great grandfather and his four brothers who were Infantry and Calvary in the Civil War and my own great grandfather and his two brothers who were Heavy Artillery, on opposite sides of course.

I found yet another family of ancestors who moved within the 20 mile radius of the area where I grew up between 1809 and 1817. Probably need to look for even more than those 5.
by Kay Knight G2G6 Pilot (593k points)
Hi Kay! Sorry you are so hot. But in our little corner of the US (Camano Island WA) we are 63 degrees at 2:30PM and it's trying to rain!

Hi Kay, it's hot here in Kentucky as well. Now if the rain would just stop... I'm from a dry state, the humidity gets to be a little much here. I love adding stickers to the profiles!

Oh Kay! You just described my research method! Golden Retriever puppy. What a perfect analogy.

I agree with everyone on this chat and Mindy and Kay in Tennessee and especially where I live it been 95 everyday for at least 2 or 3 weeks and it suppose to be again next week too.
