which direction is most likely to connect?

I have added 294 profiles but none of us connect with the rest of wikitree. Should I concentrate on ancestors of these people, their  siblings and cousins, or their descendants to try to find connections to the rest of you?

The first road I would explore is the Straughan tree twig, as there is a connected Straughan family in Northumberland in 1850's, so seems like there might be a possible connection there.
and of the 91 Straughans on here I have added about 20, there must be a connection!

So this is just kind of a seat of the pants answer as I don't have a lot of genealogy experience ... but, I'd think, going back in history would be your best bet ... only problem with that is dead ends/brick walls.  Hang in there .as. there are so many great genealogists here that I'm sure you'll make progress.

Hi Lindis,

I'm just shooting from the hip here.... but if you look at their ancestors I'd guess it's statistically more likely someone is has been working on those profiles.  (Unless  you have someone famous amongst the 294 profiles.)     If you give us a profile to look at,  perhaps we can provide further assistance.

Hi Lindis, I see that you're English. My hobby is tracing the genealogies of my favorite rock stars, and a lot of them are British -- I've found that it takes a bit of work to get British profiles connected. I don't know if Wikitree just isn't super-popular in Britain or what. Take heart! You will connect sooner or later.

I'm in the UK, and have now connected on several of my lines.

One of my tricks...each time you add an ancestor with a new surname, do a surname search and see if there are any profiles with that surname already on here from the same location. You may need to expand the other profiles back a generation or two to connect to your ancestor.

I often find many profiles exist with the same surname who have emigrated and the birth place is just a county in the UK, but if they were born post-1837, with a little research you can often find them in the UK census & BMD indexes and narrow down their birth location.
