Confirming with FTDNA yDNA?

Hi, my other half Peter has a yDNA match through FTDNA and Wikitree with a fourth cousin once removed, one has 37 markers tested and the other 67, and FTDNA says they are at a genetic distance of 3.

Is this match good enough to confirm with DNA, and if so, how would you format the citation? (The help page shows confirmation using the defunct Ysearch database.) The paper trail is solid on each line.

I've linked to their MRCA, John Cobcroft.

You can follow the guidance at the DNA Confirmation help page. It leads you through confirming DNA test matches, including Y-DNA matches. After that, try out the DNA Confirmation Citation Maker app, it can simplify the job.

At FTDNA the cutoff point for "relatedness" on a y37 is a GD of 4. So at, three you are within that threshold. Combining that with a solid paper trail you could say that Y-DNA is backing up, ie., "confirming", the paper trail and vice versa. You can then use their kits as a basis to compare with other "suspects"...lol People who may not have such a solid paper trail but still match up well through Y-DNA... imho. Bottomline, the development of the BigY with it's incorporation of SNP testing has shown STRs to not be such a good indicator as once thought. It really started with BigY500 around 2018 and really began to be confirmed with the expanded BigY700 that started in 2019 iirc.. SNPs are much more affirming than STRs. If they were to both upgrade and found to be in the same haplogroup, or one immeditaly downstream, that would be much more definitive/affirming than just STRs (y37, y67).
