Problem with flag images to add to stickers?

The wiki space for flags needs reviewing.  There seems to be some overlap in dates for different flags. Eg

  • Nova Scotia (1858-present): Premiers_of_Nova_Scotia.jpg
  • Nova Scotia (1868-1929): Flags_of_Canada-19.png

What flag should be used in the instance above.  Is there a project to standardise the flags for use in WikiTree?

With the new update to the England sticker, which enables us to add a county it adds the flag automatically.  This is great but where do I find those flags if I want to add them to the migration sticker instead of the English flag?

Also I notice a difference in colour in the Scottish flag used by the Scotland sticker and that listed in the Flags wiki space.  I couldn’t find the image used in the Scotland sticker so used the flags wiki space flag for the migration sticker and it is different.

Sorry to be pedantic but if all flags were in the Wiki space for flags it would make life a lot easier and if there were a drop down to that space it would be fantastic.

There seems to be a lot of places for flags and flag images.

A lot of the flags aren’t dated so it’s difficult to know which one to use in history for migration purposes.

Hi! [[Space:Flags]] has mostly been replaced by [[Category:Flag Images]], but the Space page is still useful to explain the use of images, and I still use links/flags listed on that page... don't know if anyone else does, though.

I agree that it's hard to find the right place/right flag in the current set-up, but I don't have the knowledge required to fix that. A bit of history: I was added to the trusted list of the Space page ages ago to help the creator of the page. Then a wonderful WikiTree member figured out a better way & created the Category pages/tables. I stayed on the (mostly outdated) Space page mainly to help redirect folks when help is needed beyond the info at the top of the space page that refers people to the category page:

Before uploading additional flag images check Category: Flag Images to check if the desired image is already uploaded. This space page is for storing images of flags,[1] primarily for use in templates, especially the Migrating Ancestor template.

I'm sorry that I don't have time to work on Flags any more than occasional lookups or uploads. I can try to figure out who's taking care of the Category page these days & get you in contact with them if you'd like to see about improving the situation.

Cheers, Liz

P.S. To answer your comment about England flags, in case you didn't see the links on the Migrating Ancestor template page: See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:UK_Flag_Images

P.P.S. If you need the coding for the lists on the template page, let me know. I created the template & am point of contact for it & the Nonmigrating Ancestor template. which includes the following explanation for the flag variable (maybe I should add it to the Space:Flags page?):

flag: Add the file name for a flag. See Template:Migrating Ancestor#Flags for links to pages with flag images you can choose from. For the sample, I copied the file name for the Virginia flag from the table of State flags for the United States. You could also use {{US Flag|Virginia}}, which will insert the file name of the current Virginia flag: US_State_Flag_Images-49.png (this template works with any US state).

PPPS - I see what you mean about the different colors... the file name for the darker blue saltire is Flags-5.jpg & the lighter blue is WikiTree-64-1.png

The lighter blue is tied to UK project account, WikiTree-64, the parent project for Scotland project.

Darker: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:User_Interest_Scottish_Clan

Lighter: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Scotland_Sticker

I think the User Interest sticker was slated to be retired, but I've lost track of its status.

The image page for the darker one includes the following comment:

If anyone is interested in the history of the Saint Andrews Cross (Scottish Flag) they might be interested in the following web site for more details.

Caution should be used when applying flag to countries. Remember only one country  in Europe has not changed it's borders Int the last last 500 years. That. country is  Andora. For instance, Scotland was an independent country up until the act of union in 1705. Berwick was not decided if it was in Scotland or England until much later.  In Australia each state was independent with it's own navy and army and immigration laws until 1900. There are towns in Central Europe that have change countries 5 times in the last 100 years.

just found another page of flags: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_State_Flag_Images (found because of [this g2g discusssion]).
