Categorization: Dominican Republic or República Dominicana ?

I am interested in creating categories for cities or provinces in the Dominican Republic. There is an existing category called "Dominican Republic". Is this what we want? Or do we want to use the Spanish name República Dominicana?

There is currently only one subcategory.

[[Category: República Dominicana]] has been in existence since 2012.

I just sub-categorized it under Dominican Republic, but Jack, below, gives good advice on this.

I just went ahead and created the dual language hierarchy in English and Spanish down to the country level, the cross-references to the other language hierarchy at each step.  Now Dominican Republic is nested in all English hierarchies and Republica Dominicana is nested in all Spanish language hierarchies.

Since I've never studied Spanish and can't easily make the extra typographical marks with my computer, please check the categories to make sure I've gotten it right.  A translation program told me that "Caribe" is the Spanish equivalent of "Caribbean", but I'd want someone knowledgeable to confirm that!

I think your next step will be to create categories for specific locations, and I would recommend that you do this as subcategories of Republica Dominicana in the Spanish language category hierarchy!
Yes, "caribe" is Spanish for "Caribbean".

Thanks for all of the help everyone. I'm new to all of this.

Categories are in single-language hierarchies.  Dominican Republic is the correct category title within the English language hierarchy.  As an aside, most often we just use the brief formal name without the longer title, i.e, we say France, not Republic of France.  But we say "United Kingdom" because the name would be meaningless without it, and the same applies to both Dominican Republic and Republica Dominicana.

It would make sense to create categories in Spanish for the Dominican Republic.  They simply need to be consistently in Spanish.  They can be cross-referenced to the parallel English language category.   I think if I were in your shoes, I'd create the location categories that you need using the Spanish names, and not bother creating any English language parallels that have not already been created, unless a special need should appear.

Does the Dominican Republic fall within a current project?  If there is, you should coordinate with the project and also the Categorziation project.  If not, you will find it helpful to collaborate with others who have done category hierarchies in non-English languages.
