Ok. I asked my moms cousin. Not rug beaters. Maybe rendering fat and scooping cracklings or canning.
Their being dressed in warmer looking clothing suggests this is a cool weather project. Butchering would have been done in the cool weather of fall or winter. They could have been canning peaches (a fall crop). My family used a hot lie solution in the big black pot and added peaches to remove the skins, then dipped them out using handmade woven baskets or scoops and rinsed the peaches in cold water. Then they would pit, slice, and can them in quart Mason jars. ( Beth Barnhill Parmer)
