Ok. I asked my moms cousin. Not rug beaters. Maybe rendering fat and scooping cracklings or canning.

Their being dressed in warmer looking clothing suggests this is a cool weather project.  Butchering would have been done in the cool weather of fall or winter.   They could have been canning peaches (a fall crop).  My family used a hot lie solution in the big black pot and added peaches to remove the skins, then dipped them out using handmade woven baskets or scoops and rinsed the peaches in cold water.  Then they would pit, slice, and can them in quart Mason jars. What a treasure of a wonderful photo, the family look like they have been working very hard holding the rug beaters. I wonder how if the family could se how it is done today. But as we can se they work very hard in the old days

Thank you for sharing another wonderful photo Janice

first I thought they were popping corn in the fire!!  Then I thought rug beaters though I have never seen one before. Pretty wild. My mom is not here to ask. she would probably know.

What are hose tools they are holding? I can’t recall seeing them before.

They look happy for the photographer and to be together. Uel is s rugged looking fellow. Great pic, Janice!

This photo is truly a gem in so many ways.  Please store the original properly or give it to an archive.  It is just too much of a treasure not to keep for future generations of WikiTree.
