When did we start using underscores instead of spaces in the names of Cemeteries?

I noticed on this profile that underscores are used in the name of the cemetery instead of spaces.  Is this now standard?

I recently made a category and it automatically added the underscores. Doesn't really matter to me one way or another - I had actually just assumed it had always been that way and I'd only just noticed, lol!

Yes it's always been that way.  They're interchangeable.  Usually the system chooses what to display.

The underscores appear with the categories added through the new category button with the list of suggested categories. Looks like the first space is kept, but the following ones are all turned to underscores.  Doesn't change anything to how the category works. The underscores only appear when in edit mode.

Correct Isabelle, It is exactly the way you describe and it is already added to Todo list to be corrected.

Team decided that there should be no space after [[Category:No Space...]] and spaces in name should be spaces. I will also program EditBOT to correct categories to this standard whenever it is saving the profile for another reason.

But categories fully function either way.

It's disappointing about the no space after the colon. Putting a space after the colon at the beginning of the category name does not affect category naming, and it is more readable with a space.

I think all the underscores should go away as they are not needed. Replace all the underscores with spaces.

Underscore fills the whitespace. You don't need to create categories that way though.

I have added about 15 cemetery categories to individual Profiles in the past few days and have created a few Cemeteries as well and I have not run into this.

Remove them and replace with spaces and see what happens, the worst is you have to go back and replace them or just go to Restore under your Changes Tab.

Usually, the underscores appear in older categories, at least to me.  The category for the cemetery you mention does not have underscores on its page, so this is puzzle.

Yep, Natalie is correct.  There no difference to how the category reacts when clicked whether there are spaces or underscores.  I like the spaces better.  LOL

Did you use the new categorization feature to add the category to the profile? I have noticed that this feature uses underscores where the actual category name includes spaces. It seems to work fine though, so I guess they are interchangeable.

Certain characters are not used in URLs (the web addresses put into the address bar of your browser).

To get around this, the wiki software uses underscores for spaces and escape sequences for forbidden characters. It only affects the link as it appears in your browser's address bar. Wikitree will properly display the category name on the page using spaces.

The only time it becomes a hassle is when you use an ampersand in a category name. Don't do that. Editing category pages with an ampersand in the category name is difficult. We always rename them when we find them. Other special characters to avoid are colons.

Capital numbers often don't play well either. !@#$ etc.
