Or am I being ADD or similar? New England Historical Genealogical Society is a misspelling of New England Historical and Genealogical Society. I have working on getting my gedcom accepted. The misspellings started creeping in around Francis Marion Eastman and Amy Elnora Palmer Eastman as near as I can remember. It also happens on many of the questions when I went to look for similar questions to what I was asking. Their name REALLY is New England Historical and Genealogical Society.

Actually according to the History page - it is the New England Historic Genealogical Society - NO AND and NOT HistoriCAL.

It's been that way since the 1845. See below.

https://www.americanancestors.org/about/history

Opposition to the use of the word “historical” was brought by Charles Francis Adams of the Massachusetts Historical Society and, as a compromise, the institution’s name was altered to the New England Historic Genealogical Society. [...] On March 18, 1845 the General Court of Massachusetts approved the Society’s petition for incorporation.

I stand corrected. I have been a member for over 25 years and have always seen it and written it as New England Historical and Genealogical Society. Thank you for the correction.

Thanks for the information on the history.

To summarize:

  • The organization is the New England Historic Genealogical Society
  • The publication is the New England Historical and Genealogical Register
Note the difference between the two. This is all as specified by the organization itself.

It's not a misspelling it's an acronym.

NEHGS is an acronym for New England Historical and Genealogical Society, and NEHGR is the acronym for New England Historical and Genealogical Register.

Just like FBI is the acronym for the Federal Bureau of Investigation or IRS  is the Internal Revenue Service.... etc.

I know NEHGS is an acronym, but I couldn't get New England Historical Genealogical Society in the title without overwriting the allowed 120 characters.

You've missing the point of my comment. All the references I see say New England Historic Genealogical Society and the REAL name is New England Historical and Genealogical Society.

Is there some way a global replace could be done to replace the wrong one with the correct one?

Regards,

Judy Bramlage

Judy, Your statement is incorrect. Take a look at their website at:  https://www.americanancestors.org/index.aspx  It says: New England Historic Genealogical Society.

The Register is called: The New England Historical and Genealogical Register

New link below

The link above is wrong - it had a space at the end of the url which should not have been there

https://www.americanancestors.org/index.aspx
Thanks.
What 120 character limit are you referring to?
There is a 120 character limit to the title. Sorry for all the confusion. I was not referring to the acronym, but rather to the constant spelling of New England Historic Genealogical Society in all the Repository links I see. I correct them as I see them to New England Historical and Genealogical Society.

What I am asking is whether there is anyway to do that globally?

Judy

The correct name of the organization is New England Historic Genealogical Society.

Your "corrections" are actually creating errors.
