There are some records on FamilySearch that may help:

1)  death record indicates he was possibly born in Sugar Creek Twnp in Wayne Co., Ohio.  http://"Ohio, County Death Records, 1840-2001," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F6VQ-WPD : 9 March 2018), James Lilley, 27 Jan 1897; citing Death, Sugar Creek, Wayne, Ohio, United States, source ID p 106, County courthouses, Ohio; FHL microfilm 579,409.

2)  Marriage Record to Christina also in Wayne Co.http://"Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-2013," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XZDV-23P : 10 February 2018), James Lilly and Christina Bast, 20 Jun 1844; citing Wayne, Ohio, United States, reference 164; county courthouses, Ohio; FHL microfilm 425,754.

3) Looking at the 1830 and 1840 census head of households named Lilly in the area will give you some hints as to the possibilities:

James Lilley 1820

James Lilly 1830  (Eleanor and David living in other twnps)

David Mary and James Lilly 1840 (all Sugar Creek Twnp.)

4)  You might look into Ohio Probate Records for Wayne Co and see if any will or estate distribution records existing that help to provide family structures for these Lilly families.

Thank you so very much.I will take any info you have available. I can take what you gave me and go back to work on this.

Someone has added a Lilley family tree on Ancestry that reflects James and Mary Lilley with I think 8 children - James being one of them.  That may give you some hints to scope out the family.  James Sr died in 1842 (no will but there are estate records).  There may have been more Lilleys of the same family in the area - it appears that there was a David Lilley who died in 1832 (possible brother to James Sr)?

potential guardianship records for James Lilley b 1826.

estate records for James Lilley who died in 1842.

There were additional Lilley records in this volume - but associated with David Lilley. There is an index in the early part of the volume.

Gail, in the 1850 census for Wayne County, Ohio, Jame and his wife Christina were living next door to (possibly) a couple of brothers. Two households down from James is a William Lilly, age 29. In William’s household is a Mary Lilly, at 57. It’s possible that James’ father was already dead, and that his older brother was caring for the mother, Mary.

That’s all I can dig up at the moment. If I find something new, I’ll be sure to post it for you.
