The Sayer or Sayre family of Hinwick & Podington, Bedfordshire

Question

Not long ago I found the grave of my 4xGreat-Grandparents Thomas Sayer and Charlotte Ann Mills in the churchyard in the village of Podington in North Bedfordshire.  I also found a grave for one of their sons and three grandsons and another Sayer couple, Richard & Lucy (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sayer-879)

I have William Sayer as the father for Thomas and it seems likely that the Richard whose grave I found was also a connection.

Digging around a bit more, I've found references to Sayre's going back to about the 14th century in the hamlet of Hinwick (it's less than a mile from Podington and doesn't have its own church, so many of the records say Podington).  There appears to be a book published in about 1901 that traces some US Sayres back to Hinwick, via Leighton Buzzard (also in Bedfordshire), but I can't find a link, although I feel reasonably sure there must be one!

Any help in pushing back my line even a little would be much appreciated!

And of course how Charlotte Ann came to be born in Dover (as per the census) and end up in a tiny hamlet in rural Bedfordshire is a great mystery that may never be explained!

I think you're looking for Sayre Family, Lineage of Thomas Sayre, a Founder of Southampton, by Theodore Banta, The De Vinne Press, New York, 1901. It's online somewhere.

But wisely he doesn't go back beyond William Sayre who died in 1564. Researching in Podington isn’t straightforward as the pre 1658 parish register has been lost, and the BT only starts in 1602. So there are no vital events pre 1602. Other than wills, the earliest Hinwick will being the same William who died in 1564, there isn't much to go on. There's no evidence that Sayres were in Podington before about 1530.

I'm pretty confident that there's no connection between the Sayres of Hinwick and the Wheelers of Cranfield, despite what the unsourced profiles show.

The book is "Sayre Family lineage of thomas Sayre  a founder of Southhampton "  by Banta.   I bought an acid free copy of it last week at higginson book company in Salem, Mass

He explains the various spellings of Sayer, sayre, Sayr, etc.  Banta was an American geneological researcher and it appears thorough, although an ancestror of mine named Stephen I can find down line Going from older to younger.  Rumor has it that my great great grandfather had a middle name Allison and the stephen I could find had a brother in law with last name Allison and that is the only connection between my family and the rest of the Sayres.  I know where the cemetary is so I am going to find if there is anything on the headstone.

I did not look at the earlier connections, but he even wrote the Mint of England to find out if a Sayre worked there.  He has lots of wills and legal documents that he quotes.
