I love the photos from the 1800s. They always had a prop in the picture, whether it was a chair (as in this photo) a couch, or large flowers, there was always something besides the person.
Your great-grandmother Nettie seems fitting to the room. Although a little barren, I love the curtains they have chosen.
Her dress is unusual for the era and that says a little something about her. She must have been extraordinary for her time. Not wearing what the usual woman was wearing.
The look on her face, though, is quite common. Photographers did not like their audience to smile (although I have seen some portraits of people that have smiling faces)
All in all, I do love this pictures.
