You(meaning me) created Unknown Profile. How? When? Feeling Puzzled.

I have two profiles with the first name Unknown. Puzzled ... I check my *Contributions to Wiki Tree.

12 July 2018

21:14  You created Thomas Misplee

21:14  You created Unknown Misplee

21:14  You added Thomas Misplee as sibling  for Elizabeth (Misplee) Abott

I remember creating Thomas Misplee, and then adding Thomas to his sister ... I honestly don't know how Casper Misplee showed up in between though.  I wouldn't do that intentionally, they look ugly.

I'm teaching myself data doctoring by fixing my own profiles first ... and the first thing on the "To do" list is yet another example of Casper.

Both times this has occurred is when I have added siblings without the Parents.  Is this the cause?   The two times I have done this, ie: siblings without parents is because I have the parents names, but not the dates of their vitals, so I don't add them.

Any enlightenment will be appreciated

Thank you in advance blushsurprise

I found this out the hard way, just like you...

When you add a sibling, the database creates a parent.  An Unknown Parent.

Hi Wendy, what did you do?  Are we allowed to delete them? enlightened

Hi Pare, except in some very rare circumstances we don't delete profiles on WikiTree.

You can either edit the profile if you know details about the father and change the first name from Unknown to whatever it should be and add any other information.

If you have already created another profile for the father, then you can merge the two profiles.

Alternatively if you don't know anything about the father, just that Elizabeth and Thomas were siblings, then leave the profile as it is, but add a comment/sources about why you know they have a common father but that at the moment you don't know anything about him.
I would just put what you know and estimate the birth and death for now, mark them uncertain and put a research note in the bio saying work in progress - make a heading

===Research Note===

birth and death dates are estimated - will enter dates when they are found

and then later when you find them out you can add them- we all have people on out tree that are not yet finished - good luck
I did some quick research and filled it in as best I could.
Just adding that in order to display two people as siblings, the wikitree system needs a parent to link them; there's no other way (other than simply mentioning the relationship in the narrative and linking from there).

So if you want them to show up as siblings in the upper half of the profile, it requires a parent's presence to do so.

Wikitree defaults to a shared father even though this may not be accurate. (Perhaps their shared parent is the mother...)

Anyway, it's the technology underneath the profiles that requires the presence of a parental profile, hence your Unknown father...

Wish I could give you all stars, Thanks so much. smiley

John Atkinson :   Misplee is okay-ish, William Misplee is Elizabeth's Father,  I wasn't ready to add him, because I don't have the maiden name for his wife.  I've been using a handwritten chart as a guide, adding them to the wiki tree as I source them.  As it was I found Elizabeth Misplee as Elizabeth-Unknown.   I let the profile manager know that her name was Misplee (from my chart), and that I would try to find a source. I finally found a will yesterday that confirmed my chart as correct, add the source etc, and now its "cab-driver, once more round the block".  I'll live.

The Maori one, Ngatai is the one that I would have wanted to delete.  Ngatai is the first name.  Maori take the Parent's first name, as a surname.  Girls will take their Mothers, Boys their Fathers.   If you had a son Harry, he wouldn't be Harry Atkinson, he would be Harry John.

I can change her to her proper gender well enough, but her name should be Ngatai Putarata the Mother of Turuhira Ngatai

What a long explanation.  blush

Thanks Navarro, you've just read the future.  Indeed that is precisely what I'll be doing.   Thank you as well Jillaine ... yep a lesson learnt, I won't be doing that again.

You're amazing Wendy! Yes the parents are William Misplee and Elizabeth-Unknown, which I didn't want to put in.   On my written chart, I have William Misplee, m.Elizabeth and had, Thomas Misplee, Elizabeth Misplee and William Misplee Jr.    I will use that source though, and add William by himself.  Thank you very much.  yessmileyenlightened

Really appreciate all of you and I'm learning so much in this one world wiki tree.

ah, good.  I found all three kids then with William and Elizabeth, and William made candles and soap?  = )
I, too, discovered this when an Unknown profile showed up in my Suggestion/Error report. As I knew absolutely nothing about the parents of four siblings that I created, and could add nothing to the Unknown profile, I thought the only thing I could do was get rid of the profile. I proceeded to break the relationships of the siblings to one another and then I merged away the Unknown profile. I moved the sibling info into the four individual bios, with links to one another in the bio. Now, after reading the comments, it seems that my 'creative' solution to what I thought was a problem for WikiTree was something I did not need to do, and that an Unknown profile in this situation is acceptable. Guess I need to now go back and create another Unknown profile and link everyone together. If anyone wants to view what I did, see my ancestor, Palen-109, and the links to her siblings in her Bio.

Wendy Fromme ... now thats an OMG moment, and worth a facebook post.  I made and sold SOAP for ages in a little town on the Coast called Raglan, New Zealand.  People often say to me, Do you still make Soap?  I don't anymore, but as a child, I always had this affinity to it, and when I got older, I finally started making it.   well well - William Misplee! #SoapMaker

Cheryl Cantrell - I'm usually a person who likes to find a solution myself as well, but G2G has so many other pluses, I'm so glad I asked Lol.

Don't know if any of this will help you, it is from Ancestry but I gave their sources so maybe you can find the same records...

I found a Thomas Misplee on Ancestry in the Bishop's Transcript with a Burial date of 10 February 1831 Buried in St Mary, Barnes, Richmond on Thames, England

Original data: Board of Guardian Records, 1834-1906 and Church of England Parish Registers, 1813-2003. London Metropolitan Archives, London.

Then I found a baptism for a Thomas Misplee on 26 of July 1752 with Parents William and Elizabeth Misplee...

I found a Baptism for a William Mispley on 7 October 1715 in Barnes, St Mary, Surrey, England with parents David Mispley and Sarah

Original data: Anglican Parish Registers. Woking, Surrey, England: Surrey History Centre.

I found a marriage for a William Misplce and Elizabeth Wyatt on 7 April 1940 Middlesex, England

Original data: Church of England Parish Registers, 1538-1812. London, England: London Metropolitan Archives.

In such a short time on the tree, many congratulations on all your contributions! I note you are loading gedcoms.... An Unknown can easily be created... MOST IMPORTANTLY IS TO HAVE FFUUNN!!! Enjoy.
by Stephen Norman Craig McCallum G2G6 Mach 2 (23.0k points)

Stephen McCallum, Its awesome eh!  That gedcom is rather a head scratcher.  It says if I accept all, or reject all it will allow me to add info etc., but after reading over and over again,  I still cant find how to accept/reject all.  Maybe I'm already doing it.  Gaahhhh.  Waiting for clarity at some stage.laugh

Yes it is misleading.  You need to go through your gedcom and look at all the suggestions and accept or reject them.   Then you will get the ADD button.
