Hello, lovelies!

Yes, I know, I'm back with more questions. This time, I'm asking about sources for Sarah LOFTIS. Sarah was born in June 1794 in Stepney, Greater London, and married William MAYHEW before she died in 1881 in St Giles, London. I've searched for her parents for a while and come up with nothing. Is anyone able to help?

Do you have any sources for her birth and death date?

This is the baptism record for the Sarah Loftis who was born on 30 June 1794:

Name:
Sarah Loftis

Gender:
Female

Record Type:
Christening (Baptism)

Baptism Date:
20 Jul 1794

Baptism Place:
St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex, England

Father:
James Loftis

Mother:
Sarah Loftis

Source: London, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812 London Metropolitan Archives; London, England; Church of England Parish Registers, 1538-1812; Reference Number: P93/DUN/005

Viewing an image of the record it says she was 20 days old when she was baptised, which fits with the birth date of 30 June 1794.

This is probably not the same person as the Sarah Mayhew who died in 1881 in St Giles, as she was 80 when she died.

Of the 4 possible Sarah Mayhew deaths in Bethnal Green between 1851 and 1861 that Paula mentioned, it is definitely not the one who died in 1856 as she was aged 0. It is probably also not the one who died in 1860 as she was aged 60. It might be either of the others, as the one that died in 1858 was aged 65 and the one that died in 1859 was aged 66. But that is clearly not the person who married William Mayhew in 1827.

The family is together in the 1851 census (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SG5G-BVJ). But William is listed as a widower in the 1861 census (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2ML-ZKS1). I don't think the death year of 1881 is correct.

Sarah's age in the 1851 census is given as 51, making her birth year around 1800. The actual image at findmypast has her birth location as Bethnal Green. But that might be just because it's where her husband and children were born so it was easier. The 1841 census (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQJJ-24V) has her birth year between 1796 and 1800.

If she definitely was born in Stepney and you have a source for that then she could be the Sarah Loftus born in 1800 to James and Sarah. (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NP4Y-RZ6).

There were at least four Sarah Mayhew's who passed away in Bethnal Green between 1851 and 1861 so I'm not sure which one she is. If you can figure that out, ordering her death certificate might be your best option to see if you can find her parents.

She was married 27 June 1821 St John Hackney - name LoftUs - London Metropolitan Archives; London, England; Reference Number: p79/jn1/055

She can't have been born in Greater London - that didn't exist.

If you are sure about her death it seems she was born around 1800. So birth 20 June 1800 baptism 13 July 1800 father James mother Sarah - England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975. Salt Lake City, Utah: FamilySearch, 2013.
