Believe it or not, when I poke around at profiles for people like your Van Alstyne relatives, often my main interest is not in helping other people with their genealogy, but rather with creating/maintaining a shared family tree that will provide a sound framework for my family's genealogy.
In the end, of course, it all comes down to the same thing, because we're all connected.
