Need new Category listing

Under the "Migration" category, there needs to be several more categories for "Immigrants to Canada." It states "There are 13 Canadian Provinces and Territories" but only 9 sub categories listed. Several of them do not have the option of choosing "Immigrants from the United States to..." In my case I need this for Quebec

In the "Emigration from Canada" category, there are only 4 Canadian Provinces listed.

I don't know if there is a specific person responsible for Canada, but I thought I would ask how these things are updated/changed. I have family members who have migrated both ways - to and from Canada. I would like to be able to categorize them. Do you wait for a specific request before updating them? Who can I ask?

Thanks so much,

Jean Blake Timmons

I noticed the same thing. It's like Eastern Canada doesn't exit.

Categories for Migration events are only created as a need arises. There are so many possible migration paths available that it would take years to setup all of the possible categories - most of which would never be used.
^ What Steven said! While a more Type-A, completionist (is that a word?) person might want to create all possible subcategories, it's really just a time drain. For example, there's no point in creating 50 by-state subcategories for US Seventh-Day Baptists--just create them as subcategories are needed.

Since there are many possible migration categories, not all possible categories have been created and categories will only be created when a need arises.

Migration Category instructions can be found at Space: Migration Category Structure. There is also a small application built to assist in finding the category hierarchy for a specific profile (what category to use on the profile, and how those categories should be linked back up to existing categories) - the app can be found at mcg.harrislineage.com.

so far the standard migration if I put

on my mother's mothers profile it should work?
nope - guess category needs to be created first - I would throw a few up there Steven - lets get this rolling!  /will the category button do these? I am guessing no
OK messed about a bit and tried to get it to go on any level 4 or five combo but no go - then I clicked a few links and found a list and so no=w I am confused

if we changed Emigrant and immigrant to migrant why are there all those others? left over from before the change?

looking specifically for Manitoba, Canada  to United States of America, North Dakota

Also Netherland (or Nederland) to New Netherland (later New York)

this covers most of my needs - well England to Massachusetts Bay Colony as well

Navarro, CategoryInfoBox Migration is used on the categories, NOT profiles or pages.

If you are trying to determine the category naming/placement, please review: http://mcg.harrislineage.com/

Using your above example, this following information is displayed. With this information, you are given the landing category (to place on the person profile) and shown what (minimum) parent categories they should link to.

Emigration Path

This category goes on the person profile (same as below)

Immigration Path

This category goes on the person profile (same as above)

thanks Steven, got it, but it is red - just the last part - or do I put the whole nesting in there? Can I go back into the category and create it myself or do I wait and see if it gets created?
You can setup categories yourself if you wish! I know this structure can be confusing the first time around, so I have gone ahead and done the setup for you. You can review the edits at your convenience.
It is confusing!  I keep trying to dip into the pool of categorization but end up running off - I know I can get it - used to program computers in FORTRAN and COBOL and C++ so I can figure it out eventually but your edits will help me get my other ones put in as well I am sure

thanks so much

This is still a relatively new category structure and we are still working out the kinks. As far as using it for migrating, if you have a person move from the US to Quebec and then 10 years later move BACK to the US this isn't really what is meant by migrating.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Emigrants_from_Quebec_to_United_States  is for the ones from Quebec to the United States. We need the Migrate level that will link to both halves.

I've notified Categorization so we can get this set up and give you the proper categories to use but for the moment, it is a work in progress.

Thanks for your reply, Steven. In my case I have large groups of family members who were born in the US but then moved to Canada during their youth, spent the rest of their lives there and died there. Also the opposite happened as their children were born in Canada and then they moved to the US where they spent the rest of their lives there and died there. Would both of these situations be considered as migrating?
I understand about the nesting of the categories within the big all encompassing one down to where you are supposed to use it, but how do you do that when you are creating that landing category?  Why do categories have to be so damn confusing!?!

Ok I think I can put the category box in correctly - and I think that it is cool you are getting this structured with a sensible hierarchy BUT I guess my problem is that I now need some other type of category for the folks that kept on moving - within the United States of America - or before that among the Colonies - I have folks moving on from Massachusetts Bay Colony to start building little towns in New Hampshire and Vermont then some went from there and others from New York and New Jersey and started towns near what would become Columbus Ohio - and then my family moved on and in fact became seasonal migrants s they had two sets of farms - North Dakota homesteads for wheat crops and Montana ranches for sheep - I believe they hopped trains back and forth - so what about these types of Migration - or wagon trains west, the gold rush etc?  I guess that goes into the Westward Ho project - do they have categories?

If a person moved within the United States (e.g., Texas to New York), or were seasonal migrants, these are not considered migration events. See here for more information.

Hi Jean,

As Steven said, this is a work in progress.  Please note that there are limitations in dates that need to be considered when creating such, For instance if you were to look at people migrating from Newfoundland, Canada to the USA, it would have to be after 1949 when Newfoundland actually became part of this country.  Before that it was directly under the British crown.  Lots of this sort of thing to consider before creating categories, we want them done right the first time so we don't have to go back and redo them.
