PGM: Mary Grissel or Griswold LNAB, wife of William Bullard?

+2 votes

Griswold-265 and Grissel-1

do seem to be the same person ( they have the same husband, William Bullard) but there aren't any sources for the LNAB.

1. Are they the same person (they have different DOB and DOD)

2. If merged - what is the correct LNAB?

The husband William Bullard-84 also doesn't have any sources, and is married to both Mary Grissel/Griswold and Mary Tracy. Correct?

I know that my husband has Griswold ancestors, and that Grissell is sometimes seen as an alterative spelling, but she's not attached to a parental family (yet), so let's see what we can find out...

I'm swamped today, but will try to get to this later. Bullard came late enough that he's not in any of the published Great Migration books. So this requires going through the database of journals on If someone else with membership can do it before me, great; otherwise, I'll get to this later.

THANK YOU for asking about this.

Carole references the NEHGR 2000 article below. It's a great article and should be read by any Bullard researcher. I've excerpted pieces of it into the narrative of William Bullard-84.

Of great interest and in response to this query here is that William Bullard's wife was neither Grissell or Griswold. First Griswold was an error. Second, Mary was the WIDOW of Francis Grissell (not Francis Griswold). Therefore, her LNAB should be Unknown.

There was no wife Mary Tracy.

The wives of William Bullard of Dedham were:

  1. ____ ____. This unknown wife was the mother of his children!
  2. at Dedham, MA 4 Jan 1653 Mary (_____) Grissell, widow of Francis Grissell. She died in Charlestown 17 May 1685.

I recommend that you change Mary Tracy-203 to Mary Unknown since no children are currently attached to her. She then should be linked to Francis Grissell. Actually see if Francis Grissell has a wife already; if she's unknown, merge Tracy-203 into her.

Then change either of Grissel-1 or Griswold-265 into Unknown Unknown, the mother of William Bullard's children. Merge the other one into the Unknown-#####.

Clear as mud?

Thanks Jillaine, that's exactly the information I was looking for to fix the profiles. I think Mary Tracy may have been married to a different William Buller/Bullard which came from an earlier merge.

I see some sources for Mary Tracy referenced at (points to Bullard and Allied families (Edgar John Bullard), Bullard, Edgar John, 1872). It also looks like references GMB:

"On 9 November 1655 "Jonas Palmer and Elizabeth Palmer of Rehoboth" sold to William Bullard, for a consideration part of which was to be paid to "Hannah Grissell daughter of Francis Grissell of Charlestown aforenamed deceased," land in Charlestown "by the last will and testament of the said Francis Grissell deceased given and bequeathed unto the said Elizabeth Palmer" has the correct names/relationships and source references and agrees with your changes above.

Thanks so much for your valuable help.
Thanks for preventing an error re: LNAB, Jillaine. That's why I should not be staying up so late playing on the computer.

Oh Carole, I've done it myself... ;-)

It is spelled Grissell in NEHGR April 2000, vol. 154, p. 178.

The whole article is on pp. 172-188.
