Can anyone look up this record on FindMyPast or Ancestry UK for me?

I wish I'd thought of this when I was at the library earlier, where they have Ancestry Library Edition! If you have a FindMyPast subscription, can you follow the link from this FamilySearch record to see the image? Alternatively, if you have an Ancestry UK subscription, it could be looked up there instead.

I just want to know if there's any more info in the image than what's in this index, and also if it's possible that his age is actually 23 rather than 28. I think it's very likely that the person in this census record is Samuel Bowmer Wragge.

The only extra information on the image is the precise address (7 Liverpool Street) and his marital status (single). The original entry for the second digit of the age has been almost completely overwritten with a large 8, so it might originally have been a 3 (or anything else).

Great! Thanks so much!
Actually the precise address could be quite important, as in the 1891 census the occupants of 7 Liverpool Street were Hugh Bowmer aged 31 (a hairdresser), his wife Julia aged 26, their daughter Beatrice aged 1 and a boarder Samuel Wragg aged 13 (a hairdressers assistant). Given Samuel's middle name this seems more than just a coincidence!
:O That's awesome!! I suspected with a funny middle name like Bowmer that it was probably a last name from his family tree!

I think my next step will be to order a copy of his marriage record (he married after moving here to Canada). With any luck it'll have his parents' names and I can start fitting this puzzle together!

Ooh, fun times! A possible birth record for that Beatrice Bowmer has her middle name as Nightingale. That also happens to be the middle name of one of Samuel's daughters! So perhaps another family name! Oh I'm having fun now. laugh

OK so fun story. (I mean, for genealogists lol.) I had a note on Samuel's profile already that his parents might be John Wragge and Ann Bowmer. This was linked to a FamilySearch tree with those parents and this census attached. Seemed very promising but I just didn't feel 100% certain. But then I saw that his sister Fanny Jane (in this census) married John Kay in 1894. Well, it just so happens that in the ship manifests from when Samuel and his family in Canada went back to visit England he names his closest relative as a sister named Mrs. J. Kay!!

I feel like Sherlock Holmes right now. I love it when this happens. Thank you for your help!

Samuel's birth was registered in Chesterfield in Q3 1877 as Wragg with a mother's maiden name of Bowmer on the General Register Office index

WRAGG, SAMUEL         BOWMER
GRO Reference: 1877  S Quarter in CHESTERFIELD  Volume 07B  Page 629

Here is a link to the same record on FreeBMD (which doesn't have maiden names before 1911) which you could add a source http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/information.pl?cite=7f31fRClFARNh7IXP01QXw&scan=1

Unfortunately you have some mistakes in the profile. Samuel's mother wasn't Ann Bowmer. She didn't marry a John Wragg until 1880. His mother was Mary Ann Bowmer who married a John Wragg in 1873 in Chesterfield. It could be the same John Wragg (who perhaps married his deceased wife's sister?) or separate families. Mary Ann's mother's maiden name was Nightingale.

BOWMER, MARY  ANN       NIGHTINGALE

Here are all the other Wragg births with a mother's maiden name Bowmer.

Oh bother. I hate it when that happens! Thanks for catching it.

Well, in the 1881 census, Samuel is living with John and Ann. So doesn't that mean it must at least be the same John? If Ann isn't his mother then it appears she's at least his stepmother.

Yes, I think so, you'll have to unravel it. I had a quick look this morning and I don't think Ann was Mary Ann's sister any more but her aunt! It's not as weird as it sounds. Mary Ann's father, Hugh, had a sister Ann some twenty years his junior so only a couple of years older than Mary Ann.
