Too many William Champneis or not enough?

There seems to be confusion over William Champneis and I suspect that the profile on WikiTree is an amalgamation of at least two different men, possibly three.  The same for his daughter Alice/Agnes.

The Agnes of Wykeham, sister of William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester and Chancellor of England, did marry a William Champneys or Champneis, and had a daughter Alice, but Alice married William Perrot or Perot and had 3 sons, including Thomas who adopted the surname Wykeham of his great-uncle and became his principal heir.  See bio in Houses of Parliament website http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1386-1421/member/wykeham-thomas-1443.  Also the genealogical charts here and here

The Agnes (maybe Champnes) who married Adam Francis/Fraunceys and was the mother of Maude Francis, Countess of Salisbury, seems to be from a totally different family.  There is some discussion of the Francis family in the Soc.Genealogy.Medieval discussions see here (scroll down to message from Tim Powys-Lybbe)

The only source that seems to confirm her father as William Champnes is the Visitation of Devon in 1530 & 1574 - see p. 31 but that was probably written about 200 years after she existed and must be a bit doubtful.

Then thirdly the William Champuneys, baker of London, who is mentioned in the bio, his will is here https://archive.org/stream/calendarofwillsp02lond#page/12 but I don't think he is either of the two men already mentioned. In the will he does refer to a wife Agnes, (see over page) but no daughter Alice, and although he does mention a daughter Agnes, the will was written in 1460, and according to the discussion of the Francis family, Agnes married Adam Francis before 31 May 1359 and I would expect that there would be some mention of her husband if Agnes was married by then?

If all this is accepted, I'm not sure where is the best place to correct this on WikiTree?  Perhaps separate the two Alice/Agnes profiles and make one into the Alice who married William Perrot, and remove the Agnes married to Adam Francis, from her current parents and add William Champnes as possible father in bio?

John - Thanks so much for the research! I'm good with whatever you/others think best. Let me know how I can help (in July, or September - I won't be available in August, but you're welcome to make any changes you deem appropriate to profiles I help manage).

Cheers, Liz

I am just glad someone is working on it :)

This is also a family member: http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1386-1421/member/wykeham-thomas-1443

And Thomas was likely the father-in-law of this person: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Strange-854
