Challenge of the week: Clean up as many location names as possible [closed]

Hi WikiTreers,

Will you join our "Data Doctors" Challenge? This week's challenge focuses on location fields.

Aleš has prepared a report of profiles from around the tree that have potential errors in their locations. These are usually simple typos that are easy to fix. But a thinking genealogist needs to give them a quick "reality check" and consider the intent of the original member and the sources before making any changes. Will you try some?

After making a change, click the "challenge tracker" button and then the edit the status. This will record a point. The member with the most points at 11:59pm EDT on Sunday night will get the badge and the bragging rights. But we'll all benefit from a neater, cleaner shared tree.

If you're participating, please post here to let us know. This helps us coordinate and cheer each other on. Or post if you have any questions about how to participate.

Thanks for helping!

Can I ask that before 'Data Doctors' comment upon a birth of death date, can they first check if it is an estimated, or uncertain date, unless they have the actual date. Constructive comments are always preferred to those that are not.
Will give this a try.
I'll help.

I’ve just started cleaning these as it’s the same error over and over. ie the word Unknown in the location field. Surely a bot could be used to clean that one so our time could be better spent cleaning other location errors?

Re - Suggestions 605, 635, 665:

A lot of the numbers in locations appear to be codes for specific places, like:

1651608, Flintshire, Wales

1652399, Somerset, England

1652400, Yorkshire, England

It was mentioned in a previous discussion (Data Doctors group?) that these were codes used in the past by Ancestry or a similar organization and correspond to real places. Does anyone have a list of the codes and which places they represent?

Failing that, please, when you remove the codes from the location fields, please add a note to the biography. Someone will probably be able to "translate" the codes at some point.

If I  do any like this I will try to remember.
When I get to my computer, I’ll plug these into Ancestry and see what they say

Help a Newbie pls - I have spreadsheet - selected a profile with error - how do I edit that profile to correct ?? Not mine so no 'edit' tab visible. Sure its simple but explain for me ??

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/631771/data-doctor-challenge-guide

That gives step by step instructions.

And if there is no edit tab visible then it isn't open. (lock isn't white) so you would have to comment to the PM or send them a message. Then you would put THAT in the status.

Thanks Steven. Which Challenge tracker do I select when logging as location names not a challenge as far as I can see ?
Sorry skip the question above. Without selecting a Challenge, I hit 'send' and show on the tracker under 'history' 1 amend so presume that's correct. I read that spreadsheet will update every now and then with those completed being removed so again, presume I need not do more than correct, update status on line and challenge tracker :) Thanks for help but let me know if I've missed anything else you need. Ta
The challenge, tracker, and suggestions list all update once Aleš updates the report. Since I manually add it to the sheet, there might be a slight delay. But when the challenge updates, all the old is wiped and reset. This is generally monday night or tuesday morning in the eastern US.

The report specific to pages for which I am profile manager is quite handy. Thanks for that. At the very least, I should be able to reconcile those (I hope ;) )

Count me in as a "Data Doctor"? Can't say that I can commit beyond my own list, as I have some prior commitments, and Ros is waiting for me to get back to one of them, but cause for the hiatus that I asked for still exists and has even been expanded upon by life. It just keeps happening!

Thanks.

Even helping with your own list is helpful! smiley
