While the European Union triggered it, other countries and the state of California have similar laws going into effect. Canada requires parental permission to collect any data on a child under 13 and that has to be recorded by the parent (goes into effect Nov 1, 2018). From what I see, Canada is likely to align further with the EU over time. California's new law is similar to GDPR (goes into effect in Jan 1, 2020). There are subtle differences which could make it interesting to be compliant.
