Accessing death notices in Detroit, Michigan

I wanted to share my path to find death notices in the Detroit area. My relatives come from four or more continents, so learning where to search for older and more contemporary sources is quite helpful with and without paywalls.

There was NO source for someone as recent as my husband's late Swedish grandmother who passed away in Detroit. Nothing on Ancestry.com. Nothing available via the Roots search here on WikiTree,  I was able to find her death notice today in a historical Detroit Free Press .pdf , but only after a detective-style search using my local library's sign-on privileges to ProQuest's databases. I am posting this here on G2G to help other researchers. As I appreciate here, learning about these pathways is invaluable.

1) Use your online log-in for your local library (assuming you are a library patron, which I'd assume, in this line of research, you would be)

2) navigate to online newspaper record databases that should include these

ProQuest Historical Newspapers: Detroit Free Press

  • This historical newspaper provides genealogists, researchers and scholars with online, easily-searchable first-hand accounts and unparalleled coverage of the politics, society and events of the time.

  • Coverage: 1831 - 1999

By searching on "death" and last name, I found the death notice of my husband's grandmother.

I did try the page of links below, however more that a few have a paywall  or can require some moderate to advanced skills in making database queries:
Detroit & Wayne County, Michigan Death Records and Obituaries:  A Genealogy Records Guide
If you want to also give it a try, the page is here:

I hope that helps.  ~  Deb

"Seeking Michigan:" http://seekingmichigan.org/  provides direct access to Michigan death records from 1897 to 1952.  You can either search the entire collection, or search by County.

I love Seeking Michigan.

You might try USGenWeb also. I've had a lot of good luck with Obits in Iowa. Here is Mich

And thanks for the Info Deborah. I'm going to check out my library.

Thank you Deb for the excellent Michigan death links. I have also had great success with seekingmichigan.org as Peter suggested above.
