Totally confused and do not like GEDCOMPARE

Totally confused. Considering leaving Wikitree. It's a mess.

Think of Gedcompare as a gate.  It wants you to make sure that your ancestors aren't already here before it let's you bring in new ones.

Now, I will agree that some of the suggestions it comes up with are strange.

Are you finding a lot of matches for your relatives?

You're not alone disliking gedcompare, but gedcompare is not wikitree or rather, wikitree is not gedcompare. Gedcompare is simply one feature-- liked or not-- of wikitree.

Instead of leaving wikitree, consider entering profiles manually. If they're for people older than 150-200 years old, they might already be here.

Entering manually gives you an opportunity to revisit your work and add the most important pieces of your work.

Happy to be of help if you'd like.

Hi Laura, The below pages may be of help with your Gedcom and GedCOMpare. WikiTree no longer does direct GEDCOM imports since so many would just add the GEDCOM and never come back to work on the profiles. Click the three links below.

I am in the process of going through my GEDcompare, and I had the same reaction as you did at first - I was ready to bail out, but then I started going through the matches, figuring out why the entries wouldn't go away (got to add the kids!), and it started to be fun, believe it or not. What worked for me was going through all the recommended matches and getting rid of them, one way or the other, and then working my way through everything else, adding people and editing profiles I had on my GEDCOM.

It CAN be done; it's just not going to be quick.
