Difficult to get around Wikitree

Does anyone else on here find it difficult to get around on Wikitree? I find it really illogical to find my way to what I want once I get past the Profile level?

I have trouble remembering how I got somewhere. I found a place where I could add myself for research assistance for Transylvania County, NC, and did so, and I’ll be darned if I can remember how I got there.

And sometimes when I go to the Help Menu, I don’t know what to look under to find what I’m looking for.

Part of this is that I’ve only been a member since April, so maybe time will solve this for me. I’m having to “think WikiTree,” not easy sometimes. But Doug and Bart are right... ask. (Even if it makes me look like a dummy!smiley)

LOL!!!
Hey, when the shoe fits, I wear it!
Yes, that's exactly it! I have been on here for some time and I've done a lot of things but as time goes on, it gets harder to move around. I know that a lot of people (including myself) have done a lot of work to make it better and the work continues, but it does seem as if we have created a bit of a monster that can't be controlled!

Today for example: I am the Bedfordshire Co-ordinator, or I was until I became Team Leader for Bedfordshire (a rose by any other name). On my profile I put in a category for myself called Bedfordshire. When I clicked on that I went straight to the Bedfordshire page where I could edit what was on it, adding and rearranging etc. However, my profile showed up on there, which was not right because it is a high end category. I removed it today, my name on that page I mean. Now I can't find that page unless I go through a few hoops first. The category system is very difficult to handle, I feel.

We need a system where we can go straight to the page we want without going round the world first. Don't we?

I am a Ranger too and to get to that place I have to jump through another x hoops until finally I am where I want to be. It must be very very difficult for new people on here.

Right! Ros is also correct about using the Help index search box. However, even then it doesn’t always give me what I’m looking for. I feel like you do, going through x hoops to get where I’m going.

What I really need to do is just keep playing with the index and get used to what I’m looking at and for. I guess there is some kind of organization to the index, but a few more direct links on that page would be helpful. The creators have done a great job with the index, but sometimes new additions require new categories or sub-categories. It’s like writing a manual and realizing that one item really belongs somewhere else or even a new chapter.

Oh, well, I’ll keep slogging through. It’s still worth it to keep trying. I’m not that frustrated yet!

There are no 'dumb' questions Pip. We were all new once and know just how you feel! Have you tried adding the Scratch Pad to your Navigation Home Page? I find it invaluable! (Go to 'My WikiTree' and scroll down. Check the box that says 'Scratch Pad') I bookmarked my Nav Home Page and it gives a great summary along with those links on the Scratch Pad. smiley

That’s an excellent idea! I’m going to try just that. Thanks, Mindy!
You don't have to use a category to get onto that particular page.

Just use an ordinary link.  I have done that for several of mine - take a look:

Now that’s a marvelous way to set that up! Thanks, Ros. (Neat initial pics, btw.)
Thanks, Pip!
That's a wonderful idea, Ros.
Right, so to get from my Profile to the Bedfordshire page, I put

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Bedfordshire

Is that it?

... Yes! that worked but now I will have a whole load of links on my Profile page, which doesn't look very nice. Perhaps I can put them somewhere else, maybe in the Scratch Pad, like someone above suggested. I wonder where that is?

Found it! under my nose on the first page.

Thank you Ros and everyone

Stella Jones

That's right! wink

Yay Stella!  And you can 'hide' the full link in the Scratch Pad just like you do on a profile:

I have been on Wikitree for three years and I have to admit, it wasn't easy at first. But I learned to get on this forum with my questions and I got great support from the members. Slowly I figured things out. But, I am still learning new stuff all the time.

You've added lots of profiles and contributing on and off for a while. Are there some things you are trying to do that you haven't done before? It can take some digging to find information on things if you haven't looked at them before. Even then some of the documentation can be confusing.

What are you trying to do now that you aren't finding? This is the place to ask.

I would also like to add that the Help section is the place to look, with its search form on the right (I rarely use the Index now).
