I am new and I'm reading the tutorials. It says to create my own profile but will all my info, like birth date, location, etc be public? for anyone to see on the web?

There are different levels of privacy available for profiles. The least restrictive privacy level you can have for a living person is Private with Public Biography and Family Tree - which coincidentally is what I am using on my profile. So you can see by viewing my profile, that even though I have all of my information entered and connected to my family members, only certain information is available to the public. As an example, I have my full date of birth listed in my view, but for other members, this will show as "Born 1980's", with [Private-] family members.

That depends on your privacy setting. Here is the help page for privacy settings, which explains in more detail what information will be visible, and to whom: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Privacy
