Can anyone locate a Samuel Woodhead born around 1730 in Lancashire England with a son James born in 1756?

I am confident in the father/son relationship between Samuel and James, but cannot find Samuel's birth date or definite ancestors before 1756.  It's possible that the records were lost in Lancashire at about this time or the family may have moved towns.

James was buried: 4 Aug 1844 St Chad, Rochdale, Lancashire

Hi Mark,

Samuel was buried at St Charles, Rochdale on the 27th August 1800.

His residence was at Stainer Batton at this time

I could not find Samuels Baptism in all of Lancashire by searching the Bishop's Transcripts for the county of Lancashire.

I will keep looking for his marriage when I have a bit more time.

You say that James died in 1844, I'm guessing they had another James born after this one then,  I found a Burial for James WOODHEAD on the same day as his baptism at Rochdale.

Thanks Geoff.  Any information you can find about Samuel would be appreciated.  I was starting to think his family may have moved into Lancashire because of the lack of records on his name.

Also you mentioned that he lived at Stainer Batton at the time of his death - I cannot find any reference to this place name apart from Staines near London.  Could this be a spelling mistake or even his occupation?

Hi Mark,

Forget the Stainer Batton this is a different Samuel & James to the one your looking for and that name refers to a property by the looks of it.

I found the baptism that names both parents Samuel & Alice and it states their Residence Place as Rochdale, and James was christened on the 26th June 1757. He was then buried 25th Nov 1757.

There are other James Woodhead baptisms & at the moment there is two I'm looking at. .

See what I can find at a later date for you have to go out now so I'll check over the next couple of days.

Cheers

Geoff
Hi Geoff,

This just gets more interesting.  I have James being born around 1756, being father of Richard then dying in 1844.  I hope I haven't gone wrong here somewhere.  Your help here is fantastic.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark,

From The Bishop's Transcripts at Lancashire Archives located at Preston.

I found two baptisms and he could be either of them but that will be for you to work out frown sorry.

Todmorden is the Registration District that covers many Parishes including Rochdale.

Woodhead, Samuel son of John & Martha was baptised on the 30th May 1724, at St Mary's Todmorden, Lancashire.

Woodhead, Samuel son of Samuel & Mary Woodhead was baptised on the 7th February 1730/1 at St Mary's Todmorden, Lancashire

Best of luck

Geoff

Thanks very much for your help Geoff.  I'll continue following this path and see how far I can get.

Cheers,

Mark
