older member still has a lot to learn

I first uploaded a GEDCOM in 2004 but didn't introduce myself or stay and learn.  Then came back early this year and learned how to 'compare' my folks and get them accepted.  But I still never began at the beginning with a mentor to show me the ropes.  Didn't even know that was possible but just now saw on another person's page that this was the way to go.  Sigh . . .I sure was doing everything the hard way and I'd like to back up and learn the right way.  I thought I knew just a bit of wiki, but I sure didn't know WikiTree.

So I would like to introduce myself and get to know the good folk at WikiTree.  I'm was born Jane Alice Jackson, more recently known as Janie Jackson Kimble.  Born in Wood County, WV, 89 years ago and have lived in Florida since the early 50s.  I've been doing Jackson research abt 14-15 years and it has become a full-time addiction.  I think of genealogy as a jig-saw puzzle with NO side pieces - one never knows where the trail will end.

I've traced my Jackson line back to immigrant Robert Jackson of Hempstead, New York; then branched out a bit and began working on other Jackson puzzles.  Mainly just to differentiate between various Jackson lines; so many have the same first names in the same location.

So now I've got my profile up and 2 to-do lists.  I want to eventually work on the Jackson One Name Study but I have a LOT to learn first.  I haven't categorized anything yet and my uploaded folks are so scattered; I need somehow to get better organized.  My desktop database is over 25,000 and I will never have time to get it all uploaded by myself.  But I am certainly willing to share if others are interested in helping with the job. (It is a mixture of well-sourced and not-so-well sourced info.)

I'm looking forward to learning a lot more and meeting a lot of other researchers!

Do you need help with something specific Janie?
Janie, do you need a Mentor to contact you? Or is there something specific we can help you with?
I just found this evening this How-to #1 and realized I had missed this info that maybe would have made my progress a whole lot easier than me just wandering thru various help pages and bumping into so many things I didn't know about.  So I'll start with #1 and work my way thru it.  Don't know how many 'how-to' pages there are but looks like a helpful way to introduce newbies to the site.

I will note my progress on my 'Diary' to-do page and if a mentor would like to tell me when I go off track, or suggest a new path, that would be appreciated.  (Wish I could have numbered those to-do pgs but didn't know about that.)

Thanks for introducing yourself, Janie!  At your age of 89, it's understandable that you may think you don't have time to upload all of your data, but I'm hopeful for you!

You'll likely find that many of the people in your desktop computer's database are already in WikiTree (particularly the earlier people who may have oodles of living descendants), so you might want to concentrate on adding the more recent generations of your family. If I were you, I'd focus on adding people's profiles -- you can leave the categorization to others. smiley

Hi Janie, welcome back! Your two best friends are the Help Index and since you have been gone a lot has changed so I suggest you read the New Member How to Use WikiTree Pages as a refresher course.
