David Waddle, 1735-aft1790, need more sources

+3 votes

Hi Cousins,

Need some help with this one. This David Waddle is proportedly the father of my William Waddle/Waddell. I have only one source for David, 1790 Census of Abbeville District, South Carolina, and no sources for dates or a birthplace. The only source for the connection between David and William is oral history. Since oral history has led me down some very deep rabbit holes (sometimes for decades... yes, I'm that old!), I'm unwilling to trust this.angry

I have noted on both David's and William's profiles the disputed pedigree.

I need some one to work some magic here, a la Eddie King cheeky. Many thanks ahead of time!!

I'm seeing a couple of land grants in Mecklenburg and Guilford for a David Waddle in 1784 and 1788, which could be for this David or David's son named David or William's son named David... if David or William had sons named David, at least.

  1. Land Grant, 1784 on Ancestry.
  2. Land Grant, 1788 on Ancestry.

There's a David Waddell who has 190 pages of estate records on Ancestry that might mention a William somewhere in there if you comb carefully? Died around 1805, records were in Iredell County, NC, USA.

Thank you so much, GB! I’ll be checking these out tomorrow as the later it gets the more my eyes dim. (Its 11 pm here). Really appreciate you taking the time to look these up for me. Family Search didn’t give me much with the date parameters.

GB, I'm beginning to think that the David Waddle of Abbeville, SC, is not WIlliam's father, and not just due to lack of sources for him particularly.

The name David seems to run in this family like the 1916 WNC flood. The David of the estate papers you linked for me are too late for what I'm looking for, but I'm pretty sure he's related somehow.

However, I did find some deed abstracts in the 1700s that place some Waddells in the Steele Creek Community of SW Mecklenburg County. There's a George taking on an orphan in the Jan. Session of the 1806 court, and this George shows up more in the court records than any other Waddell, as well as a James (several mentions), Jane, and Jenny.

I found a will abstract for William H. Waddell (1847) mentioning several children.

Now I'm really confused. I know this is one family, the Mecklenburg one, but I just cannot find out the exact relationship yet. Very frustrating. I'll keep digging.

The assistance is greatly appreciated.

I found William Hugh Waddell/Waddle Mecklenburg NC died Feb 9 1847 in Mecklenburg NC. Parents listed as David H/Waddell mother Sarah /Mose/. spouse listed as Jean Cathey. 1790 federal census. I found it on family search org under pedigree resource file - Givens-Mc coy. sources was listed. I hope this helps.
