Categorization Project, Reintroduced. Would you like to join us? [closed]

The Categorization Project on WikiTree is the place where discussion happens to help develop categories for use across the site. Because so many people use them, it is important that structure of categories is discussed before major implementation and the Categorization Project helps facilitate that, as well as set up new categories, fix erroneous categories, and apply them.

The project goals are:

  • Category maintenance: Correcting errors in category names; Adding categories to heirarchy.
  • Category oversight and collaboration: Facilitating category oversight and collaboration between projects and Wikitree users .
  • Category vision: Assuring that the whole category structure from top to bottom is coherent and easily accessible.

To support these goals, we have revamped our Project to include a team approach, with a "Maintenance Team" and a "Vision and Collaboration Team."

If you would like to join us, post an "answer" below and we'll get you a badge and get you working on maintaining our WikiTree categories.

Thanks!

I've already got the badge, do I need to explicitly sign up for one of the teams?
Brad, no. I'll be in touch via email (notifying members starting tomorrow.)
I’m also already in the Project and have been steadily working on the Wanted Categories, so I guess I’m Maintenance.  But where has the Wanted List got to?  It used to be easy to find on the Project page.

Yes, I know you're in the project, we just wanted to make sure that you wish to remain. (There are several people dropping out.) Anyway the wanted categories are here:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:Wantedcategories

Soon, we will be asking everyone to work them from our google spreadsheet:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1x2KrLuvBl3qkDZwedYhYwuwoSyCFUaghT6SBoE0xyHQ/edit#gid=1644064154

and the Maintenance Sheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Cf1RvNWhSU-xKaS9DipMR9aZa8FRWujtq4RnsmasaPk/edit#gid=1618464475

Thank you for all of  your work,

Regards,

Natalie

Thanks, Natalie.  Yes, I want to stay in the Project.  The link toi the “Special:Wanted Categories you gave above gives an error message, and the Google spreadsheet requests permission, which I requested.  No biggie—just thought you should know.  We’ve whittled that Wanted List down to the ‘nearly impossible’.
Thank you, Robert. I fixed the link so it works now. It is also on the new Category Project page. I will check in on the spreadsheet.
I'd never seen the 'wanted categories'. I went through them, and found a few of my categories, misspelled. That's handy.
Right now there are nearly 800 of them. "Wanted" categories are sometimes called "red." They have no parent category and are, therefore, not connected to the category heirarchy.
I have been updating my family and have started to categorize, so I should probably join.

How do I get the badge/
I'll PM you.
I was told. I didn't have the badge.  I realized that I didn't.  Please award me the badge.

Ok, it's about time! hahasmiley

Please add me to the Project too please. I have been adding Australian Immigration categories for more than 12 months and may as well keep up to date with the reasons we get naming convention changes.

Thank you in advance for the Badge and acknowledgement
Hi, I've started to Categorize the profiles I manage and am not doing so good sometimes at adding categories, so maybe I should join so I can learn more.

Isabelle messaged me and I also have a couple of questions.

In Scotland, is the parish added to the county? Then are we supposed to add the town to the parish? I've only been trying to add parish's and not quite getting it right. Also, why do the parish's in Inverness-shire have parish after the name and not in Aberdeenshire, for example ?

David.
Hi David

With reference to Scottish counties, Susie McLeod is the sponsor for Inverness-shire.  She can better explain the category naming for parishes in that county.  At present, I don't believe there is a standard for naming in Scotland, but again, Susie would know more about that.

Honestly, I've been working on this sort of thing here and there for various projects and additionally for other members upon request for a while now.

But yeah, I'll stick my hand and join if others would like, considering that I've been collaborating with other project leaders with the categorization of their projects smiley

I have been checking out the Occupations category and noticed some missing links, like some occupations not being in the Occupations by name list. I also saw lots of occupations that are clearly organized by country, for example the Athletes, but the Occupations by Country page is not very elaborate in comparison. Thus, I would like to work on those kind of links between categories.

I'd like to join to learn to use this resource. I "think" I'm entering the category correctly (following directions) but can't see it in the profiles I'm working on.

Once I type [[Category:S.S. President Pierce]] in the category box, what next. Clicking enter does nothing, saving does nothing. I'd like to further categorize this with Honolulu T.H. to San Francisco August 6, 1925.
by Melissa Jordan G2G1 (1.6k points)

Certainly you can join, but our goals are to maintain categories and category structures. Anyone can create categories and project membership is not required.

About the SS President Pierce. The category does not exist yet and if we are to create it, it will be without the "points" so "SS" not "S.S." According to Shipslist, there were three ships with the name, so you would need to determine which one to use. What is "Honolulu T.H. to San Francisco"?

I’d love to help out but I’m currently travelling so can’t start until mid September.  I’m interested in shipping and Australia and I’m already on the England Project for Cornwall.

As much as I'm categorizing and working to straighten categories out, I might as well join the team and be involved in a coordinated manner ;-)

I thought I had joined when I signed and was approved for the email list.

I think the badge itself was overlooked.

Thanks for the update and badge.

No, you have to actually ask to join the project, but you finally did.

I'd love to be part of the project, Natalie.  Love using the Categories.  And, yes, I'm probably one of the people who have contributed to mis-categorisation (I'm Australian, hence the spelling. Sorry).  I have time on my hands.
by Kenneth Evans G2G6 Pilot (247k points)
Kenneth, we can work out all of those Australian military categories!! Welcome!

My ancestor John Bodine (Bodine-320) was a naval veteran of the War of 1812.  For that reason, I (Bodine-309) would like to join the War of 1812 Project.  Thank you.  Willis Bodine
by Willis Bodine G2G Crew (600 points)
Willis did you read the scope of the project? You can add categories to profiles without being  a project member. We help projects set up structures and we maintain the category system by working on category errors, assigning parent categories, etc. So, please send me a message if that sounds like what you would like to do!

I need to learn more about Categorization by doing it more ... for the profiles and pages I manage ... and more importantly to assist the projects I'm in. For one of my projects, I'm specifically supposed to be working on this and drafting a proposal! surprise

Fortunately, or unfortunately?, my interests and goals fall into both of the teams mentioned (Maintenance; Vision & Collaboration). I enjoy being a worker bee ... and I'm always naturally on the lookout for process improvements (i.e. I cannot stop myself from doing this! Question is whether I'll step forward and share my ideas ...)

So, please allow me to join the Categorization Project!

Thanks!

I would like to work on this project, especially on the cemeteries.  It really bothers me when they are not named right and even though I just started with the cemeteries project I am learning fast what should and should not be. I have made one or two errors myself and would like to correct those also. I would like to learn how to fix the names and places on cemeteries working mainly in the southeastern states of Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, North and South Carolina. I really would like to learn this and fix them before I make any more free space pages so they will match up to begin with.
