I think the William Ditchburn registered in 1839 in Morpeth with mother's maiden name Horsley is the most likely. As I mentioned earlier, in 1901 he was a retired engineer living in Elswick. The main industry in Elswick at the time was the Armstrong Whitworth company, so it is very likely that he worked there. In the 1890s Armstrong Whitworth were building ships for Argentina.

The one with mother Gair was baptised 26 July 1840 at Warkworth, Northumberland. He lived in my home town of Amble. I placed a question on our local facebook group yesterday evening asking if any of his descendants know whether he ever travelled abroad. He was a colliery labourer and then general labourer by occupation. He married locally in 1884. In the 1901 census he is living in Amble.

The one with mother Horsley was a mechanical engineer. In 1901 he is a retired foreman mechanical engineer living at Elswick in Newcastle upon Tyne. An engineer living in Elswick suggests to me that he may have worked for Armstrong Whitworth, a company dealing with ships, armaments, locomotives and more. Could possibly have been a job that involved international travel.
