The reason I ask is I would like to find out / confirm if my family has a branch in Katharine Houghton Hepburn’s tree.

Did not find Houghton at surnamedb.com , however, their write up on Howton includes examples of that spelling (Houghton) in the context.

You may want to try looking up Howton at surnamedb.com to read their description. It's a free site.

Fraid not, there are at least 20 places in England that seem to have been originally Halghton, which evolved into Halton, Haughton, Houghton, etc.

Different families took the name, but they didn't keep track of where they came from and the spellings evolved independently.
