Are the BMD sources for children considered sources for the parent(s)?

+10 votes
When looking for sources for an "unsourced" profile - sometimes I can't find BMD/census sources for the person, but I can find birth, marriage, and death records for their children that are already attached to the profile.  Sources that match to the names of both parents and the child (all existing and linked profiles).  So question - is that enough to be considered a source for the "unsourced" profiles of the parents?

There is a category to check when you make a change in the sourcerers challenge.  It is "Added source that shows relationships", or something
similar.  That will show up in the status changes.  Remember to check it if you find this category applicable to your added sources.

Having a child is a pretty significant event in a person's life, isn't it?

A record of the birth or baptism of a child is a record of an event in the life of the parent(s) and is a logical element to include in the profiles of the parents. And it deserves to be counted as a source for a parent.

They are definitely sources.  Sometimes they are the only sources you might find for the parents.

Often, Ancestry source hints include death certificates where the parents are listed. I’ve also seen WWI draft cards used as a source if a parent is named on the card. So, I’d say that while not a direct source for BMD, these events, too, show something a little indirect.
