CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Weekend Chat is for everyone. It's a place to catch up on what people are up to and to share what you've been doing.  New members can say hello, introduce themselves, ask questions, and meet each other.  Our seasoned members can share progress or successes from their projects, give tips and advice, or chime in on hot topics.

Post as many answers and comments as you wish. It doesn't hurt anyone to post a lot, and enjoy the multitude of topics.

Finally Laura's back in business! Glad the sale is over with!
Thank you for hosting the chat this weekend, Laura!
I never sold a company before... I have learned a lot!

Still learning....  now everything to do final tax stuff is with my accountants.  In the home stretch now!

Ditto to what everyone said here Laura. Also what you said here Laura.

angelWelcome everyone to the sweltering hot summer and getting ready to go back to school Wiki Tree weekend chatangel

H Laura, Thank you for hosting the weekend chat AND congrats on selling your business.  Wow that must be a relief !
Nicole, bitter sweet.  Loved doing the spice blending and helping people by creating custom blends for folks with various health issues.  We had over 20 no salt no sugar products that had a lot of flavor.  We did not do bland.  But that does not mean all were hot either. We dd not use substitute sugars or salts.  Instead we used real spices and vegetables.  I am thrilled that a former client who is a Chef bought it.  I will be consulting for at least 3 months.  But I will have more free time and with 2 active gorgeous granddaughters and a grandson due in December my time is focused more on them.  Which is a good thing.  I also am not going to be picking up hundreds of pounds of spice which was taking its toll on me.  And my business partner was facing some illness issues and surgeries that took her away for months so it was the right time to do this.  So now I am fully retired.  I actually retired for the first time in 2009 from 22 years from the world's largest performance improvement company.  A magical place actually for being part of corporate America.

But having a spice business in retirement was something I had always wanted to do and I did it so I am glad I was able to fulfill that passion for the past 8 years as we opened in 2010.

It is good to be back here though too!  But we have such great people here who stepped in and hosted for those weeks.  And I think it is good that others get a chance to host.  It is fun and you meet the nicest people here and you never know what you are going to learn!
Welcome back Laura!!! Glad to see you found the light at the end of the tunnel!
Thanks Mindy!   The new owner picked up all the big stuff yesterday late afternoon and is thrilled to be the new owner.  It is fun to see her enthusiasm.   I will be consulting during the transition period for at least 3 months.  We want her team to succeed.  But it is fun to be really back!
Have a great week everyone!  Hope to see you Aug 10!  I am closing the Weekend Chat now!
RAIN. No caching today. Slowing down a bit. Got a new cooktop yesterday, tried it out, seems ok. Lots of stuff got moved to clear space, now, move back? or give away?

Tips

1.  What is a source?  There are multiple threads discussing this and what constitutes a legitimate source.   Ok, by strict definition, anything even if it has incorrect data can be a source.  So, there is a lot of confusion about when to use the Unsourced template.  Some folks are putting it on to any profile that only has an internet tree listed as a source.  Others are only putting it on blank templates.  Within this thread (it is a long one but worth reading  https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/650562/template-uncertain-categorization-profiles-improvements ) Eowyn responded with:  There still seems to be some confusion.  It's specifically regarding the Unsourced template.  There was a lot of discussion when the template was first being used as to what profiles it should go on. Should it be profiles that don't have primary sources? What if it's just secondary? What if it is just an online tree? What if someone just names a book? It was decided by the community that only for defining the purpose of the Unsourced Template usage, unsourced meant nothing listed as a source.  Otherwise there couldn't be clear agreement on when to use or not use it.  Eowyn Langholf G2G Astronaut

2.  Don’t get discouraged if you can’t find a source for someone.  News flash, not everyone has a paper trail especially as in some countries mandatory recording of births, marriage and death did not start until sometime in the 1900s.   This means we are going to have a lot of unconfirmed people the farther we go back.  So, what do you do?   When you have exhausted looking for things like birth, marriage and death records, look for census records, voter records, military records, school records, articles in local newspapers.  If you can find people who are still living who knew the person interview them and keep a written record of when you interviewed them, names of those you interviewed, dates and locations of interviews.   These are still sources.  Then keep a list of the questions you asked and the answers you received.  Don’t be surprised if two people have different views of the person or any given event.  Courts see that in testimony every day… humans have faulty memories, what they see and remember is often colored by what they want to see and remember.  But these are better than no sources at all.  Internet trees should be treated as possible clues but also possible fiction.  So, question anything you find in them until you find something that collaborates the information in them.  Some are gold mines and some are huge waste of time leading you down the proverbial rabbit hole…

3.  Using machine translations.  Translation by things like Google Translate are not perfect but often can give you an idea of what the document is saying.  Then, if it is something that you think you can use, you can find someone who does know the language and request a human translation.  As an officer of a large international genealogical organization based in France I worked with people around the world to create a document that could help us at least do some rough translations of common things like birth, marriage, and death records.  I have placed a copy of this tool in the Puzzle Chat folder located at: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/rqo8mt2eobujwgd/AAAzB3IGNHqNKXBfdE985NBZa?dl=0

It is called Genealogy Word List 7 and I put it there in 3 different file formats:  xls, pdf, and html

What you do is find a word in say English.  If you want to know what that word is in another language just go to the column with the language you want highlighted in yellow.  Latin is one of the languages and a lot of old records are recorded in Latin.   If you are versed in any of the languages or want to add a language not already there, just let me know.  I am always happy to update this tool.

Laura I loved this tips. Thanks a lot.

angelWelcome everyone to the sweltering hot summer and getting ready to go back to school Wiki Tree weekend chatangel

What a great list Laura - thank you! I can email you the missing Portuguese words later if you want.

Mindy
That would be wonderful!   I will update the sheet then and rename it.

I figure this is a big help to people researching in ancestral lands who spoke a different language.  Also if you think there are words that you see over and over again in birth, marriage, or death records that should be included in the list let me know I am happy to add them.

DNA Puzzle

With so many WikiTreers delving into their heritage via DNA I thought it might be fun to do a word search coupled with fill in the blank puzzle.  So, this is a 2 stager…  First find the 10 words used a lot in DNA research then fill in the blank that gives the definition of each word.  By the way, FTDNA is running a sale on all of its products right now.  A good place to look for these terms is the DNA Project’s Resource Page: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:DNA_Project_Resources_Page

1.  ____________________ are normally found in pairs; human beings typically have 23 pairs of these, 22 plus one that determines sex of the individual.

2.  ______________ which is passed down from the mother to all her children, males and females.

3.  ____________________  tests provide genetic matches from both father and mother sides of your lineage. However, generally, it cannot tell you which side the information is coming from.

4.  ____________________  is a collection of people who share inherited traits from a set of closely linked alleles (genes or DNA polymorphisms) inherited as a unit.

5. ____________________  is donated from the mother to both her sons and her daughters.  With a match to this, it can help eliminate some branches of your tree because a father cannot pass this to his son.

6. ____________________  often abbreviated as cm is a unit for measuring genetic linkage. It is often used to infer distance along a chromosome. However, it is not a true physical distance. It is defined as the distance between chromosome positions where the expected average number of intervening chromosomal crossovers in a single generation is 0.01.

7. ____________________  is the process of matching to 3 or more people (not close siblings or parents) on a specific chromosome with a minimum of 15 cm and 700 SNP range.  This is used to “prove” relatedness.

8. ____________________  is when two or more people share an overlapping of at least 7cm (some are now saying at least 15 cm)  and 700 SNPs on the same chromosome.

9. ____________________  traces only the male line of a male individual. When testing the Y-Chromosome, there are two types of tests, short tandem repeat (STR) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). STR tests are best for recent ancestry while SNP tests tell about more ancient ancestry.  The higher the number of markers tested the more complete the results but also, the more costly the test.

10. ____________________  occurs when people intermarry repeatedly with others in a closed community.  When cousins marry close cousins the same DNA is introduced to offspring from both parents.  This is seen in small geographically remote groups as well as groups created by marriage or religious affiliations who only marry within their respective members.   Some Jewish and Amish groups share more DNA and more small segments of DNA than people who are not from their communities.  Often this results in matches that look closer than they really are.

Can you try it again?
Is anyone else having any problem opening the link?

I finally got it some how.
Not sure what was going on.  I tried it from more than one computer and it worked every time for me.   Glad it is working for you now!

Spotted a blogpost on my Twitter feed today with a surname in a location I thought I recognised. I think I have found a person in the post on WikiTree and the post was about photographs of the family.

I have sent a message to the PM and the blogger.

Hope I am right as the person I identified was a first cousin once removed of Martha Fudge who married William Rose a relative of mine.

Will update if I hear any more.
by Hilary Gadsby G2G6 Pilot (314k points)
Welcome to the Weekend Chat, Hilary!  That would really be cool if your suspicions are right!   It is always fun to find links to our family and  photographs are extremely rare to find so that would be really special!
The PM and blogger have now made contact and match confirmed. It is possible that this is going to add to the tree.

Great result all round.

Only goes to show how important it is to label photographs and keep them together.
That is wonderful!  So glad it worked out for you!

Ditto to what everyone said especially Hilary. Also welcome to WikiTree and also to  angel the sweltering hot summer and getting ready to go back to school Wiki Tree weekend chatangel.

I did a great deal this last week, just not on here. Let's start with the previous manager for where I live did not file my lease properly and the new manager wanted to raise my rent, just now solved that problem. Then my son's father in law collapsed in front of the one grandson at band camp, his heart stopped and he stopped breathing. He is in the ICU but he is not responding enough for anyone to tell if he has brain damage yet. Our water was off on Wednesday due to a water main break and to add insult to everything else we were run off the freeway by an 18  wheel semi truck.

Maybe next week will get better.

Welcome to the Weekend Chat Jim!   You know Dale is an "audiophile" so you are starting something here that all the other "music makers" here are going to have to post their sad songs...  oh, wait, isn't that in a lyric somewhere?

Laura, using those big words, I just like Cream. They were big when I was in High School with my friend who went on to win 10 Grammy's, at last count, as a recording engineer.cheekylaugh

I agree with everyone here on this chat Dale and what you are saying. I know what you are going thru and thinking and feeling Dale. I have had weeks like that.

Something to play when the brickwalls just don't come down...
You are simply too  much!
Wow Dale, prayers said for you and your family.

The following is a direct copy of the Youngest daughter of Terry Ady, my son's father in law.

"My dad has suffered brain damage from the lack of oxygen he experienced. It's not looking good. Monday they will be taking him off the breathing machine and letting nature take its course. This could be my last weekend having my dad and I am so overcome with grief I can't even put it into words."

I am not sure if he has a profile on WikiTree but his oldest daughter manages most of the profiles for her family and I believe she created one for him, but it would be unlisted at this time.

I just checked and there is an unlisted Ady profile managed by Nicole Byers that I believe is him. There is also a Terry Ady who is a family member that could be the same one, The birth decade fits.
Prayers and hugs to you and your family. The waiting time is horrible.  I have done many vigils in my lifetime with my grandmother having been one of 12 children.  None are easy.  My heart goes out to you.
I agree with everyone here Dale.

I got an email from one of my Living Notables yesterday - this fellow used to be an actor on TV. He no longer does that, but his father is still currently in the business. That was exciting.

He wanted to know if I had found any new information on his paternal line. I had to respond and say NO I have not. Thus his line is still an island and is not yet connected to the Global tree.

So I went and did some more research on the Notable I received the email from, in order to update his page. And discovered that he now has a wikipedia page. If he had one before I never saw it. He was not a Notable yesterday. He is a Notable now!! LOL

So I tried to add a Notables Sticker. It doesnt seem to work.

It doesnt work for ANY of my Living (unlisted) Notables. Their names do not show up. The sticker works fine for those profiles that are OPEN but not for the unlisted ones. You might want to check yours.

So I have just posted a question!!

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/657439/are-the-notables-sticker-and-the-notables-templates-broken

My family chat as always is due in 5 hours. Hopefully my sister can finally be available. She has missed the last 2 weeks of chats.

Hi Robynne!  You might want to copy and paste your question about the sticker not working with an unlisted profile into G2G under Tech Help because I don't know that they will pick up on it from the Weekend Chat post.

I also have not forgotten I need to get back to you on some DNA questions.  Plan to work on that this weekend!

Sounds like you have a fun family!
It's already up on G2G Laura!!

But I moved it from Wiki Help to Wiki Tech
OK I have an update on the Notables sticker problem.

Apparently since the Living Notables are UNLISTED. their names will NOT show up in the templates so its not a bug - but it is a consequence of the GDPR restrictions!!

Problem solved and I have closed the question!!
You get the Detective Award!   Great work!
You got contacted by a notable? AWESOME! =D Keep up the good work! And hey maybe you'll find something in the tree. Who knows?
I spent 2 hours on my reply email trying not to make me sound like a fan girl!!  LOL
LOL! I'm sure you did your best. You should have seen me reacting to a video my friends made of Stan Lee. They saw him at a restaurant and asked him to make a personalized video. They did and called me soon after. THAT was a fanboy moment!

Ditto to what everyone said on this chat. Especially to Robynne.

Hello Everyone,

and a respectful, polite, and honorable welcome to this weekend's Chat!

Well, I scoured the YouTube universe for Enterprise, and just could not find a model that does her justice.  Also, I can't make myself apply 'USS' to her, although it is painted on her hull.  I don't think Mr Roddenberry thought that one through.

Anyway, I humbly submit for your approval this inadequate substitute:

Cheers,

Herb

So does this mean you are challenging Herb to an origami duel?
ME?! Noooo No. No. Nononononono. I can barely fold letters into envelopes.
That is COOL.
Thanks, Natalie!

I too want to add "That is cool"  I have such a talented cousin

Thanks, cuz!  laugh

Awesome origami as usual! Too bad Chris didn't go for the origami duel... might have been fun laugh

Thanks, Mindy!  laugh

Chris, check this - my origami sensei, Jo Nakashima, can fold envelopes into letters!

Nice! (Until the bots get ya.)

International Beer Day - The First Friday in August

International Beer Day – First Friday in August

International Beer Day is celebrated annually the first Friday in August. Be sure to raise your glass with friends around the world thanking those who work brewing delicious beer in your local area. Why? Because International Beer Day brings the world together celebrating the beers of all cultures on one remarkable day.

Did you know, this is a day for beer lovers everywhere. In backyards, taverns, pubs and breweries all over, people celebrate beer’s greatness while showing gratitude to their bartender and waitstaff. By the way,  did you miss National IPA Day yesterday?

HOW TO OBSERVE

“A fine beer may be judged with only one sip… but it’s better to be thoroughly sure.” – Czech Proverb

Enjoy a glass of beer and celebrate with the rest of the world! Post on social media using #InternationalBeerDay – Celebrate all who brew such wonderful beer around the globe.

HISTORY

Our research shows the origin of International Beer Day dates back to 2008. Because the month of August is hot in many parts of the world, the first Friday of August was chosen. Visit the site for IBDfor more information.

Whether you sit down with your favorite or try something new, whether you give the gift of beer or keep it for yourself, whether you hit the many bars celebrating or celebrate with a night in at home—enjoy yourselves responsibly and share the love. Beer transcends all borders.

by Dorothy Barry G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)

Alas, I am allergic to it...  so I get to be everyone's designated driver...

My husband will love to know this though!   I can hear him now... "Well I have to do my part to commemorate this day!"

With my water I toast you!

UGH - sorry Dorothy, but since I cannot stand alcohol, I hate the smell and the taste of beer, I will not be celebrating this day...

How about National Watermelon Day instead LOL

nationaldaycalendar.com/days-2/national-watermelon-day-august-3/

I'm with Laura - toasting you all with my Sprite and my Watermelon!!
Oh yeah!  My kind of holiday!  I can barley contain my excitement.  I'll be frothing at the mouth until I can hop to the store to stock up!
Yea! I’m heading for the fridge now!!! Just one, though. I’m still working as an Integrator today, so... Csn you imagine what those profiles would look like after two? Last of the big time drinkers. (I became an Anglican so I could drink and not feel guilty!)
LOL  Herbert. That was cute. I was definitely chuckling there!!
I've been drinking a lot, well not really a lot, but when I do drink beer, I've been mixing it with limeade.  50 - 50.  Now, I am thinking watermelon beer might be really good!
Mmmm beer so delicious and a great reason to get out of bed.

The only brew for the brave and true...

Did you know one of the oldest recipes ever found was for honey mead beer in Egypt!   Now, I do like honey...
Steve, you crack me up!

"The greatest invention of all time."

How Beer Saved the World

That dragon has the right idea! (It is a dragon, isn’t it?)
A dragon it is, Pip!
Ummm.. I like beer. So did our previous dog, a Flat Coated Retriever, you had to watch where you set down your glass.
Fun fact: The more German sounding the beer's name is, the better it tastes. =)
Michelob Ultra. My brother goes for Mexican beer, Sol, Bohemia. The other brother (the overseas pilot) goes for European beers.
My husband loves beer.  Pilsners, Halfweissen (I probably butchered that spelling) and on a hot summer day after cutting the grass a Lambic.

One year for Christmas I gave him a beer making kit. and beer making lessons.  He made one batch, enjoyed it, but said it was a lot of work!

It is now in the basement...   I really need to clean out the basement and have a yard sale or something...

NATIONAL WATERMELON DAY – August 3

National Watermelon Day August 3

NATIONAL WATERMELON DAY

National Watermelon Day recognizes the refreshing summertime treat enjoyed at picnics and fairs! Watermelon is 92% water, which is why it is so satisfying in the summer heat.

Watermelon is a vine-like flowering plant originally from southern Africa. Its fruit, which is also called watermelon, is a particular kind referred to by botanists as a pepo, a berry which has a thick rind (exocarp) and fleshy center (mesocarp and endocarp). Pepos are derived from an inferior ovary and are characteristic of the Cucurbitaceae. The watermelon fruit, loosely considered a type of melon – although not in the genus Cucumis – has a smooth exterior rind (usually green with dark green stripes or yellow spots) and a juicy, sweet interior flesh (usually deep red to pink, but sometimes orange, yellow, or white).

The fruit was likely first cultivated for its ability to hold plentiful water in a desert landscape, especially since the wild melon was bitter or tasteless.  Seeds and art found in tombs of Pharaohs furnish substantial evidence of the watermelon’s value. Cultivation and breeding brought out the better qualities of sweet and tender fruit we enjoy today.

Watermelons can grow enormous, and you will find competitions across the country which award prizes each year for the largest one.  The Guinness Book of World Records states that the heaviest watermelon weighed 262 pounds. To learn more refreshing watermelon facts, check out www.watermelon.org.

I saw on TV this morning that it is Burger Week, does that help?
Now that is something I can sink my teeth into!
Death by chocolate events? We have one at church every so often when Father Nick makes his multi-chocolate dessert. We all go into diabetic shock.

Ahhh watermelon

Sands-1865-2.jpg

Pip one of my great great grandfathers was a candy maker...so I get to claim a genetic link to chocolate!

He was from the glass and crystal making line.  When the bottom dropped out of the glass industry with pressed glass being the new thing, he moved into candy... swap out sand for sugar, metals and minerals for dye for color, potash for flavorings and you have candy.  The same way ribbon glass is made (technique not recipe) is the way ribbon candy is made.

Now those glass and crystal folks also made glasses for things like beer and wine which  am allergic to.. and bottles.  Bottles were a big thing.
Watermelons? I think I'll take a few dozen. =) Love watermelons!

I especially I agree with Dorothy on this chat. I love watermelon a lot. Ditto to everyone on this chat.

angelWelcome everyone to the sweltering hot summer and getting ready to go back to school Wiki Tree weekend chatangel

Wasnt there a book by Daphne du Maurier called "The Glass Makers" or something like that. Excellent read.
Yes I have it.  It was a fiction.   I have books written by master glass makers some of which go back centuries.   Last year I sent 17 notebooks from Jean Nicholas Walter to both the Corning Museum of Glass Rakow Library and to St Louis Crystallerie archivist and just recently to my friend Jean Hartwig who is a glass maker of note himself.  I also sent them to Benoit Painchart for possible inclusion in Eclats Verre a magaizne we publish twice a year devoted to glass families and their trade.  (We being GenVerrE).
Thanks Robynne! I love watermelon in the summer...yum!

Thank you for hosting this chat, Laura! Glad to hear you finally got that business taken care of. Are you relieved?

I’m participating in my first challenge ever, Integrators for August, trying to become a doer of he WikiTree word, not just a hearer.  I’m creating profiles for men who served in Co. C, 10th North Carolina State Troops (Artillery). I had two direct ancestors in, plus a host of uncles, cousins, in-laws, and other distantly connected folks. Here’s the link...

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Co._C%2C_10th_Artillery_Reg.%2C_1st_St._Troops%2C_N.C.%2C_CSArmy

I need to figure out how to add this to the right category, and where in that category. My brother created a virtual cemetery for as many as he could find if he’d men. I’m using it as a jumping off point to get info for further research. Several of the men already have profiles,  it I’ve created four more.

The creek got to about 1 1/2 feet of flood stage. I may live in the mountains, but our property actually sits in a very small valley. We’ve flooded only once before,  it it didn’t make it to the house... close, but not quite. I’m afraid to walk down to see how much more damage has been done. Three trees already lost to erosion and one nearly.

A Sears repairman showed up on Monday and fixed my mower. I immediately got the back jungle down at the greatest blade height, and the mower still struggled, even with new blades. Now with the rain for he past four days, it needs it again. Praying for a couple of dry days!

Everyone, be blessed this weekend!

by Pip Sheppard G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
There sure has been a lot of rain. Our local weather said we had 20" for the month of July. At least we're not in Lynchburg, Virginia. They got about 7" in about 3 hours yesterday. According to my sister in law there is quite a bit of flooding in one area -- those poor folks had a tornado go through this spring. We have been watching the dam they are afraid it is going to burst, since its about a mile from where my husband grew up.

Ditto to everyone on this chat.

angelWelcome everyone to the sweltering hot summer and getting ready to go back to school Wiki Tree weekend chatangel

[[Category: 1st Regiment, North Carolina Artillery, United States Civil War]] is your category, Pip!

Hope your weather cooperated and you got your mowing finished!

Yesterday, our creek got to within 18 inches of spilling over the bank and then receded. We lost a three foot wide chunk of the bank further away from the house. Can't get the riprap in fast enough. Came back up again on the next round of rain later in the evening. Lots lower today, so far. Sunshine and mowing today. Grass is still wet, kinda, but I gotta get it done. (But I'd rather be sitting here on the computer except that it wrecks havoc on my FitBit goals!)
We've had a lot of rain here as well Pip. The lawn is usually quite brown by now, but its green and thriving this year. We don't have flooding though as the house is on a hill, although the driveway looks like a creek at times (The neighbors below get all of the water). Hope you had luck with the mowing!
Hi, Mindy. We had a rainless day yesterday, Saturday, so I got the last of the mowing done! Woohoo! Time to mow the back again!

Hello Wikipeeps,

This past week it's been raining on and off. I'm currently endeavoring to post via my cellphone so this is taking some time. This past week I has been a learning curve for me and I'm a bit conflicted wikitree policy says that a good source is one where another can verify the integrity of the source. What if it's a census record and it's on ancestry but not on family search? What I been doing lately is giving enough information from the source in order to help verify the integrity of the source but not being able to view the independent source. Not all have access to ancestry. Lately I been just using ancestrylibrary edition to look up census records I couldn't confirm through family search. So I say all this to just ask. Should I be posting links to ancestrylibrary or ancestry or just give enough information for someone to be able to have the same hypothesis?

WikiTree version of Shakespeare...  To link or not to link, that is the question...  Whether it is nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of other researchers....

For me it comes down to who are you writing the profile for?

Your family who may come a century later?  Or for yourself?  Or for other researchers?  Or all of the above and other options...

I think the easier you make it to find the info the better.  Having said that, not everything is available for public domain where you can link to it.  So give as much detail as you can to help others find the documentation.

Ditto to everyone on this chat.

There are unindexed records on Family Search. I found a description of how to get to them and refer to them. The majority of their sources are NOT indexed. I haven't tried this yet. Has anyone?
I have Sue, I am a volunteer on familysearch.org. and help with transcribing records for them when I can. That is why sometimes you will not find a record on the search there but a week later it will appear. Transcribing records and later indexing them is very time consuming but is is all possible due to those who volunteer. And you do not need to be a LDS church member to volunteer.
How do you get to them?
I am exploring now. There is a tab at the top of the screen for Indexing. I'll let you know what I learn.
Laura, to find the unindexed records, go to the Search screen as usual.  Scroll past the name, place, date fields, to where it says Find a Collection.  There's a link to Browse all published collections.  Dig in!
ok they throw you right in after some instruction. I just transcribed 10 death records from Dubuque Iowa for 1920 and 1915. It is hard sometimes reading the handwriting. It looks like they review the records. It is sad. There was someone run over by a train that they didn't know much about. Mostly older people, one over 100. One infant a month old.
Great thanks!  I will take a look sometime this weekend.

Welcome to the weekend. Maybe it will stop raining soon. The humidity seems to be down a bit today, yesterday morning it was 78 degrees F and 94% humidity. That's just nasty.

I've not done a lot on WikiTree this week, but had a few good finds. I made my first foray into reading online images of land records. What a treasure! I did find my gg grandparents, Jared and his wife Susan, in a deed record and have not been able to find any marriage record for them.
by Kay Knight G2G6 Pilot (593k points)
Kay that is a great tip.  Deeds and land records are often the only trace we find of some of our ancestors prior to when cities and states mandated records for birth, marriage, and death needed to be kept.
I had the same general weather yesterday. It was almost unbearable.
The only way to make the rain stop is to appease the rain Gods. First you need to find the blood of a sanctified boar....

Weather's been insane here, too. Crazy amount of rain and intense heat. It'll be cooling off soon. I hope.

Congrats on finding the records!
Hehe I don't mind the rain but the humidity and heat is exhausting
Records were a great find. There doesn't seem to be a marriage record for Jared and Susan. I suspect they were married by the local Methodist circuit preacher before the church was founded, since he was one of the first members. I also found the deed record for the court fight between Susan and her 6 children where they couldn't decide how to partition 99 acres so it was sold at auction. Actually her sons bought it for $7305 in 1855. Lots of money back then, but pretty equal division of the estate among the 7 of them!
Sitting down with your heirs before you are gone is I think something everyone should do to express your wishes so that everyone understands and hears it.  I have seen families degenerate into messy legal battles because one person does not agree with what is in a will.  I know one person who came from a family that was always fighting in court who video taped everyone who was in the room and then himself so that no one could say they did not know what he wanted or interpreted the words differently.  He was crystal clear in what he said and wanted and even said, "this does not mean x it means y".  He did not want to see his children fighting each other in court like his family had.  It worked because after he died his children did not contest his will.
Chris do you mean singing "rain, rain go away" doesn't work?  (Look of horror)
That's step three once you have bathed yourself in the blood of the boar.

=)

If you haven't guessed that I'm joking by now....

Hopefully, the weather gets better soon! For everyone!

Thanks for that information Laura it sounds very good. Ditto to everyone on this chat here.

Chris, our resident comic book expert... we all know that you have no sense of humor and never ever say anything funny  (wink, wink).  Of course we never say anything here.... we write it!  (snicker)

Yes. I'm so stoic it's unreal. =P
What I love about deeds and land records is when they mention previous owners and also when lives touch others property mentioning the names of them. Gives a sense of community and interrelationships. Marriages among neighbors and such.

First thing's first. Because I am shameful and shameful self promotion always works. Here's my latest video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHOKreIJ8QA

I reviewed Action Comics #1000 and sort of made it into a Superman tribute. Why not? Felt good to get back into the groove of video producing. AND this year is the big blue boy scout's 80th anniversary. Working on a comic for next week and then it's off to producing the comics I made for part of Camp Nano. My readers will not be ready for the feels.  This week's comic is being worked on. It's the end of one storyline. Another begins. I've really been putting the heroes through the wringer. What's a comic without drama? Kind of boring.  =)

On the genealogy front, I have been active on Twitter posting in the hashtag #genchat and Wikitree's own Eowyn saw me posting. I helped someone figure out the site and what our main gimmick here is. So, the the tip is that if you're on social media posting genealogy stuff don't be afraid to mention this site. Lord knows good press is better than bad press.

On yet another genealogy front, I've slowly been adding the spouses of my great-grandmother, Henrietta's siblings: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Legault-604

My mom's been helping me out a little as she remembers a few of them. It's been helpful. Also been adding more people here and there. Should ask her to help me beef up Henrietta's bio a bit. I'm sure she's got SOME stories.

I also got a new DNA match with someone who came to America a few years ago from Italy. It should be cool to see how we match. She is going to talk to her grandmother and she has some of the same names in her tree. Interesting. The plot thickens!

Speaking of plots....Back to the writing cave! Enjoy the video! GO! LIKE! SUBSCRIBE!!!!!! (Okay. That was a bit much. Sorry. XD)

Hi Chris!!
Hey, Robynne! How are you?
Had to laugh myself silly for the ending, the dude with the long hair ad-libbing. Hilarious.
That is my friend, Zenith. Zenith reviews anime and does video game let's plays and assorted things. Check out the channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/ZenithWillReview

The cameos have always been amazing. I crack up watching 'em. I ask people for cameos every once in a while and Zenith is one of the ones who manages to make me laugh time and time again. I write the lines but they just knock it out of the park. =)

Glad you liked the video!

Had to laugh when you said there’s something you should be doing. I was thinking, “Yeah, get your butt off of YouTube and work on G2G posts!” laugh But since you’re working on the spouses thing, I guess I’ll let you off the hook!

LOL! Please do. I got a lot of spouses to make profiles of. Henrietta had a lot of brothers and sisters. And then it's off to Rocco's kids and THEIR spouses.

At this point I think half the population of Haverhill circa 1925 is going to be on Wikitree.

I was actually scripting a few comics. I have enough covered for a good, long time.

angelWelcome everyone to the sweltering hot summer and getting ready to go back to school Wiki Tree weekend chatangel

Sounds like you had a great week Chris. I've had a few people from other genealogy sites come over as well. I smiled the other day when I saw one of them say in a private group that WikiTree is a great place to research smiley  I went, liked and subscribed. Will have to watch the full thing later so I don't wake anyone. And we appreciate you, even with your 'shameful self promotion'

Aww! Thanks, Mindy! Let me know what you think of the video. I dunno if comics are your thing, but, everyone knows who Superman is. Who doesn't? That's kind of the point of the video and why I glossed over his origin. I think we all know that story.

I had a great week and I look forward to this week. Should be good.  Just spruced up a few pages and added cemeteries to a few people. It's funny. I've like cornered the market in St Patrick's cemetery in Haverhill: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Saint_Patricks_Cemetery%2C_Haverhill%2C_Massachusetts

To be fair my cousin, Raymalene, put all the profiles together on Find A Grave. I'm just working with her. =)

Wood Lathe

But to the matter of this message:   Peggy's Folly

You wonder, why a picture of a wood lathe?    Today we sold my wood lathe for $270.     I thought we paid $600 for it 23 years ago; my husband kindly remembered it as $300.   It was barely used.

Except for this lathe, I’ve shown good judgement when starting a new hobby….. ,  don’t buy the best golf clubs when you start golf,  rent skis when you start skiing, don’t get a 5 year old a baby grand.   Then if enthusiasm wanes and you move on to other ventures, your spouse won’t even comment.     What was I thinking with the lathe?     I didn’t even make one finished piece, but at first I did revel in the joy of wood strips and saw dust flying off scrap wood.  (Honing my skills of course.) Perhaps I thought my loved ones needed bowls and vases.

The lathe stayed in my husband’s shop for over 20 years; he never mentioned it was a space hog.  He even conveniently forgot its true cost. Could the discarded lathe have been a reminder  for me to show self restraint?  Perhaps it was a good investment after all; saving me from additional misguided purchases.

Actually, the better picture to post would have been the 70 year who picked it up (he brought 3 others with him), beard of 40 years, unkept hair (but lots of it), overalls, competent hands,  agile yet  slow movements….. he asked if I ever made a bowl.

So it’s gone. The question:  is this a lesson learned?  Only time will tell.

Thanks for hosting Laura!

Hi Peggy, Your photo of the Wood Lathe is privacy protected. If you do not want to lower your profiles privacy to green I suggest you create an anything / free space page to add photos to and set the privacy to green or open then the photo's will copy over to the chat.

Here is a copy of your thumbnail for the Wood Lathe.

The thumbnail is not privacy protected. McReynolds-216-2.jpg

I find that a simple copy and paste will do the job!!

These answer boxes will accept graphics and images!!

Just click the edit tab and paste the picture in wherever you want it to be.

Thats how all the blue stuff around the main chat opener at the top of every weekend chat is done.

It's also how the "National Day of..." images and text are done too.
You are correct, Robynne! But the photo must be open and not privacy protected or the photo will not copy over to other profiles or to the chat. For instance, if I changed the privacy setting on the original page(s) the chat headings are on it would not show the chat headings as it does at the top of the Weekend Chat.
Thanks David and Robynne.... I'll try new things next time!
Can she put a copy of the photo on a free space page? THat would make it open, wouldn't it?

Yes, as my first comment stated you would need to open your own profiles privacy setting or create a free space/anything page and set the privacy to green or open. Under the Add drop-down menu, it is now called a New Thing.

Create a Profile for Anything

There are four ways to create WikiTree profiles. It's important to choose the right one.
Oh Peggy your post made me laugh!  I wanted a simple cardboard loom... the kind where it is stiff with slits cut in it.  You can weave all kinds of squares and link them.  It is light weight, portable, and easy to use.

So my husband bought me something called a portable loom that takes up more than half of my kitchen table...weighs more than my grandchildren and needs someone with an engineering degree to operate it!  It is sitting in the basement....  I should sell it...

Ditto to what everyone said here.

angelWelcome everyone to the sweltering hot summer and getting ready to go back to school Wiki Tree weekend chatangel

Laura,

I recommend selling it at least before 23 years goes by. wink

Too late I think it has been longer than that!  My oldest is 40 and he was not driving yet....   sigh...  I am a pack rat!  My husband and I talked about it just last night.  He wanted to throw it away I want to research and either sell it or donate it!

Happy weekend, everyone. It was a slow week. Didn't get much done on WT but have been slowly working through some French Canadian records to prove/disprove who my GGGrandparents were. Some cousins have a theory but I'm not 100% convinced. The result is close to a one name study. When I get tired of that line I work on cleaning up my WT profiles.

The weather here has been cooler and a bit wetter (nice change) but the weather pattern is bringing in smoke from a lot of wildfires so going outside isn't a plan today.

Hope everyone is doing well.
by Doug McCallum G2G6 Pilot (527k points)

Ditto to what you said Doug.

angelWelcome everyone to the sweltering hot summer and getting ready to go back to school Wiki Tree weekend chatangel

Doug,

Smoke doesn't seem fun.   Enjoy the "cooler and a bit wetter" ,  which is what we have here in Kansas City.

You're fortunate to have cousins that contribute to family genealogy,  a good debate just makes everyone investigate more.
We're pretty much staying indoors where we have filtered air. We're about 5 miles from the foothills and they are barely visible today which is much better than yesterday.

It is nice having "cousins" that are working on this. My dad's side even has a number of them on WikiTree. My mom's side there are some further back on WT. I need to update the first cousin's on my mom's side with some recent work. They aren't on WT. Anyway, I'm working on finding them in Quebec and resolving the conflicts in the data. That requires meeting the "reasonably exhaustive search" requirement. Transcribing census now and parish records after that. Doing it off line until I establish which families are which with all the similar names.

The focus on WikiTree at the moment seems to be dealing with families of merges (quite literally duplicated families (either unlinked & connected, pre 1500 and pre-1700, incorrect LNAB/CLN with the correct. or public & open)) either way that's a good total of 28 (at the moment)

Study as per usual, oh and joined another project considering I've been working in areas which this particular project deals in
by Richard Shelley G2G6 Pilot (245k points)
I adopted a lot of profiles in May.  I inherited then some messy profile families with lots of data doctor errors that I am slowiy working through.

I think I have something like 78 left to fix.  I started with well over 100 and these were not the easy ones... these are the father to you, mother dead before child was born kind of errors with little to know documentation.  One profile took me over a week to research between doing stuff I needed to in my non wikitree life...

I had one family that had pending merges and it was a big mess with 3 and 4 duplicates.  I did the ones that I adopted and could do and then worked with other PMs to get the rest cleaned up.  I think there might be one waiting on another PM.

Pre 1700 and pre 1500 time periods have a lot of their own quirks least of which is fictional biographies out on the internet for people who never existed but are in some book that someone wrote 200 years ago or more based on no stated sources.  Sigh... I feel for you!
The pre-1500/pre-1700 family merge is actually really simple, one set of the profiles became unlinked when they were initially uploaded through the GEDCOM process, and with talking to the manager, I've been able to identify which profiles they are duplicates of.

The biggest pain is when you find you've added a series of duplicate profiles because the original has an incorrect spelling of the LNAB

Ditto to what everyone said here on this chat.

Summer?! HA, we've got winter!
Ah one of our Southern Hemisphere cousins!  You are right it would be cold there now!
Richard the one I had was Koenig, also seen as Konig with and without the umlat so we had all 3 going....

Richard, I've done that very thing. Started a profile, no matches came up, finished the profile, then found a match. How frustrating. I've had to go through the whole process of the merge, sitting an waiting for approval before moving on. Grrrr.

Yes welcome back to the angelSweltering summer and getting ready to go back to school WikiTree weekend chat.

I kind been better weekend for us here at the Barnett house this week. Monday after the nurse was here my mom had an appointment in Farragut, Tennessee at 2:15 so she was late to it because of my dad. So about 15 minutes after she left he started to calling after my mother and he kept it up even after she came home. Then that night after he went to bed my mom was hurting not filling good that she went on to bed so I unloaded and loaded the dishwasher and started it and put away the food that need to be refregrated and frozen. Then I open my dad's bedroom door like my mom does when she goes to bed. So when I did that he started to hollow and  work me and my mom up and kept it up so me and my mom didn't get much sleep that night. Wednesday morning he got a root canal done on a tooth that he cracked when he has grinded his teeth together in fit of angers. Then that night mom decide not to give my dad a medicine at night and give another medicine that his neurologist prescribe and the other one was suppose to help him with his sleep but mom decided not to give it on top of the other pill the neurologist prescribe for him so he didn't sleep that night because he work up hollowing at 3:00 a.m. Then mom had an eye appointment on Thursday afternoon after dad dialysis so he was tired and didn't yell but sleep. Then my mom came home and said that he looked white and felt hot. He wouldn't eat good at supper and was very weak couldn't hardly walk and almost collapsed on the floor. When he does that me and mom a lot of time can not get him up and we have to call someone to help get  him up. But this morning he was feeling better. Also didn't want to do his therapy. Mom almost has all of her money to be able to pay the builder off and closing fees also. Mom finally told the nurse that he did bite one of her fingers. Mom told my sister that even to. So this week was some right better than other weeks. But what is funny it is either my dad in the hospital, or it is my sister husband parents in the hospital. His mother just got out of the hospital and now at home. His diaharra problem is cleared up and pneumonia seems to be for right now. We are having trouble getting him to move around to keep pneumonia away that was the whole problem at the first of the year. Plus now he has cancer inside that doesn't help, he still is losing weight and we can't get him to eat and he will not eat a lot of times because he doesn't want to eat because now instead of being on dialysis for four hours it is at 3 hours and he is happy with that time. But for his health it is not good. He wants to sit and lay around and sleep and not do anything but he says he wants to help but he can't because he doesn't have much strength to stand up for 1 minute even before having to sit down. Mom would get hospice but Medicare will not pay for hospice and dialysis at the same time.

This morning as my mother was going to take my dad to dialysis he decide to fill his diaper a little before they left but my mom said she didn't have time to change him that he will have to sit in it like that till he got home. So after my mom changed him when he got home he did not fix his belt tight enough so when he got to the chair he wanted to sit in he decided to put his hands in his pockets and push the pants down in front of me so mom had him get on the commode for 4 minutes because of that. Then when my mom had warmed up the soup it was a tad to hot so we had to let it cooled but dad was ready for his so he went to the table and was wanting the bowl of soup on his placemat then so he tried to put his rollator in front of him and the table and so I removed it and told him he didn't need it there and then he pound where he wanted the soup and told me to put the rollator there I told him no and he didn't like that. He not talk straight because he isn't and will not use his CPAP during the night.

This morning didn't start good dad had gotten mom to crying so hard and she couldn't hardly eat breakfast for him. I didn't get to hear the preacher at the church I was going with mom and dad and you can stream it on online because of it. He not accepting he has gotten old and can't do things he did in the past even for others and it is giving us a lot of problems.

My mom pretty soon will pay for the rest of the house and closing fees on the house. Then we will slowly and little at a time will move up there.

I have put on GEDCOM imports that I am fixing. I like this GEDCOM better than the old one. Thanks for improving it so much. I am so happy with that.

Hang in there Linda.  I know how hard it is to deal with chronic illness with your parents.  Nothing prepares you for what you are going through.  Hopefully things will settle down for you.

Yes, hang in there. Please know that we are thinking of your and praying for you. I know how you feel, somewhat. My dad had Alzheimer's and we kept him at home as long as we could. Tough because someone always had to be there.

Pip you right it is tough because someone always has to be there and watch them like a hawk. Also they have ways the want to do especially when it is wrong and will not do what you want them to do especially when it is the only way to do it. He is so much like his dad now. This stuff changes people to be bad when they were quit, never cussed, hit themselves, and other stuff.
Oh, do I know! My dad completely  changed from the person he was. Had to be watched like a hawk. When he was still able, he plowed up vegetables and things like that. We had to put deadbolts on our doors because that wasn’t in his memory. There were a few time he got away from us, and we had to go find him. He became resistant and angry and violent (he was a big guy). We wore ourselves out taking turns watching him so we could get away from the situation once in a while. Finally, Mother had him evaluated at a hospital in Charlotte. From there, he went to Broughton Hospital in Morganton for a couple of years. When he left there his strength was broken, but he had absolutely no memory of who we are and was unresponsive. He died in a nursing home in Gastonia, the city of his birth.

All that said, don’t ever feel like folks don’t understand nor care about how YOU are doing. Those of us who know care deeply. I asked for prayers during our service at church today, for you and all your family.
Pip I can't agree more.  When my Mom had a massive bout of hypoxia she got down right mean.  She told my aunt to go to that very hot place talked about in religious texts and told me she wished I was never born.  I had to tell people it is her body, it is her mouth talking, it is not her.  The woman you knew is gone because of lack of oxygen to her brain.  Disease is talking.  She acted like she hated me and yet I went to see her almost every day.  Or at least every other day.  She never thanked me for anything I did.  My Father on the other hand who had dementia always knew me, always had a big smile for me and always was glad to see me.  She was supposed to be in her right mind because she could tell you her name, the date, and the name of the President.  My 5 year old granddaughter can do that!  Doctors don't want to declare someone incompetent because of the paperwork and it often requires a court date.  Yet anyone truly in their right mind could listen to her and realize something was off.  She drove people away at the end and if not for hospice I think I would have given up.  I cannot say enough good things about hospice.  They were the ones who told me why she was acting this way and what caused it.  Not her doctor.  When another doctor who was covering for her doctor who was gone for a while called me and started the conversation sort of scolding me for letting her deal with her own decisions I said "hold the phone" and let him know everything I had tried and what the other doctor's response was due to HIPPA.  Well the doctor who was covering turned out to be a higher rated person on the hospital staff and he looked into everything and called me back and said she should be recommended to hospice.  Her doctor said she would not qualify.  When they did the evaluation she qualified on 3 levels.  So sometimes you really need to get a second opinion.  Once we got her into hospice and into the proper care facility I dropped the doctor that was causing the issues and got one who really cared and tried to get her the help she needed.  The new doctor put her on medication that softened the anger and I had the first decent conversation with her I had in a year.   Anyone who had had to go through this knows how hurtful and upsetting this is for all members of the family and no one is prepared when it happens to someone you love.

So, in adding in all my Jewett relatives, one of the perks is when you run across someone who is somewhat notable ... my criteria is that they have a page on Wikipedia!!! lol

So, whoo hoo ... a couple days ago I run across,  Mary (Jewett) Telford (Jewett-3369).  She was a humanitarian, nurse during the Civil War, an author, lecturer on the temperance circuit and charter member of the Woman's Relief Corps. And, most importantly, has a Wikipedia page!!! lol

Greetings from Everett, Washington.  My daughter and I went to Seattle this evening to see Shakespeare's Henry IV, part 1 (one of her favorites) and right there in the program was a descendancy chart of our favorite old gateway ancestor, Edward III. King Edward had so many children that they were fighting over their share of the inheritance.  This eventually led to Shakespeare's history plays. Also I am confirmed that i hate driving to and in Seattle.  If it weren't for my daughter helping me on her phone GPS as I drive I wouldn't do it.  Even so she got sore at my wrong turns and I pleaded with her to keep with me.  All is forgiven now. She took a photo of the lead actor holding her Prince Hal doll that she customized herself.  We are well except that my son's cold is hanging on.
by Margaret Summitt G2G6 Pilot (315k points)
Welcome to the Weekend Chat Margaret!  The Henry plays are not as well known as his more romantic and comedic ones.  I don't think I have ever met anyone who had them in their top 10 list.  What does your daughter like about it?  You have sparked my curiosity!
My husband and I raised her with our love of history and literature.  She was homeschooled and part of that was her participation in the youth Shakespeare program of the Seattle Shakespeare Company.  When I  was majoring in English and later getting my Ph.D. in English Literature I was exposed to the history plays but I didn't catch the spark of enthusiasm for them as she has.  She loves analyzing the complex personalities and political intrigue.  She loves the ancient Romans (Julius Caesar, Antony & Cleopatra) too.
I always liked the History plays the best and was lucky enough to be taken frequently to the Old Vic in the 1950s. Wow. The BBC ran the Olivier films on consecutive nights and my non Shakespeare non History husband became addicted as well. Pity they don't get more exposure.
Ah that explains it!  I like The Merchant of Venice and King Lear.  Saw MacBeth once and had a hard time sleeping that night they did such a good job with it!  The Tempest and Much Ado About Nothing were popular when I was in college then it shifted to things like Waiting for Godot and other existentialist stuff... go figure!

Do you see that I had made a Shakespeare pun on an earlier thread?
Oh what fools these Wikitreers be when first they practice to deceive. =P
Alas poor Yorick, I knew him well, but how to find a good source....
Oh my gosh! Beckett’s Waiting for Godot was the worse play I’ve ever read! Had to force myself to get through it!
